New movies are hitting Netflix every week this fall, and the Toronto International Film Festival just offered a sneak peek at a handful of them. The 47th edition of this star-powered smorgasbord for cinema lovers is wrapping up this weekend, and the Netflix stars came out to play. Check out the Netflix titles below that took the great white north by storm, as well as updates on when you’ll be able to see them. 

The Swimmers

Toronto’s opening-night selection was The Swimmers, an inspiring true story from director Sally El Hosaini. The film follows Yusra Mardini and her sister Sara, two refugees who escaped the Syrian Civil War and fled to Germany by boat; when their motor failed, Yusra and Sara pushed and pulled it for more than three hours while swimming. Yusra is now an Olympic athlete who has twice competed under the flag of the Refugee Olympic Athletes Team. She and her sister are played in the film by real-life sisters Manal and Nathalie Issa.

The Swimmers will hit select theaters on a date TBD and starts streaming on Netflix on Nov. 23.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery

The follow-up to Rian Johnson’s breakout whodunit Knives Out sends detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) on an island vacation with a murderous twist. Along the way, he’ll meet suspects including Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, Kate Hudson and Dave Bautista. Will the Southern-fried sleuth be able to make his way to the center of this particular Glass Onion? You’ll have to peel it yourself to find out.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is coming to select theaters on a date TBD and hits Netflix on Dec. 23.

The Good Nurse

Jessica Chastain and Eddie Redmayne star in this true-crime drama that tells the story of one of the most prolific serial killers in US history — nurse Charlie Cullen (Redmayne), who murdered as many as 40 patients in his care during his time in the hospital system. Chastain takes on the role of Amy Loughren, the fellow nurse who eventually helped authorities bring her co-worker to justice. 

The Good Nurse will hit select theaters on Oct. 19 and Netflix Oct. 26.

A Jazzman’s Blues

After more than three decades of trying, Tyler Perry has finally made A Jazzman’s Blues. A sweeping romance set in the Deep South, the film follows a pair of star-crossed lovers whose relationship faces the twin challenges of professional ambition and deeply entrenched racism. Starring Joshua Boone and Solea Pfeiffer, this is Perry’s ultimate passion project.

A Jazzman’s Blues hits select theaters on Sept. 16 and comes to Netflix Sept. 23.

Wendell & Wild

Coraline director Henry Selick’s long-awaited return to stop-motion animation is a demonically clever film about a young orphan named Kat (Lyric Ross) struggling with her demons... literally. Brothers Wendell and Wild (Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele) play Kat’s demons, and they have their own plans for her. Also starring Angela Bassett, James Hong, Sam Zelaya and Ving Rhames, the eye-candy film is a gothic fairy tale that has to be seen to be believed.

Wendell & Wild is coming to select theaters on Oct. 21 and on Netflix Oct. 28.

All Quiet on the Western Front

The first German adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s classic novel once again tells the story of World War I from the perspective of the young men fighting it. Already selected as Germany’s submission for the best international feature Oscar, the film stars Felix Kammerer as Paul Bäumer, the novel’s unprepared protagonist, along with Daniel Brühl and Albrecht Schuch.. 

All Quiet on the Western Front will hit select theaters in October and Netflix on Oct. 28.

1899 

Netflix’s only TV premiere at the festival was this German horror series, which follows a group of European migrants traveling to New York City on a steamship. When they encounter another migrant ship adrift at sea, however, things quickly grow more complicated — and more frightening. The series was co-created by Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese, who previously created the Netflix series Dark.

1899 is coming to Netflix this fall.

The Wonder

Star of the moment Florence Pugh features in this Irish folk tale from director Sebastián Lelio (whose 2017 feature A Fantastic Woman won the best foreign language film Oscar). Based on the novel by Emma Donoghue (Room), The Wonder tells the story of a young woman (Pugh) seemingly surviving without food for months on end. Is it a miracle? Or a curse? Inspired by a real historical phenomenon, The Wonder is a psychological thriller with a surreal twist.

The Wonder will hit select theaters in November and Netflix on Nov. 16.
