Is your face covered in tears, or did you just take a dip in an Olympic-size pool like the Mardini sisters? That is the question you’ll be asking yourself after watching the emotional teaser trailer for The Swimmers, which has backstroked onto our screens ahead of the film’s upcoming world premiere at the 47th Toronto International Film Festival.
The Swimmers follows Syrian refugees Yusra and Sara Mardini, who attempt to overcome unimaginable odds to make their family’s Olympic swimming dreams come true. The teaser depicts the sisters — played by Nathalie Issa and Manal Issa — trapped on a stalling inflatable boat in the middle of choppy waters as a version of “Bulletproof” begins to play. The girls grab each other’s hands, and one thing is clear: Yusra and Sara only have each other.

As the teaser continues, we see their origin story — they celebrate with loved ones and spend time with family members, whose lives are torn apart by war over and over again. But Yusra and Sara’s shared love of swimming keeps them bound together. And it’s that passion that pushes the sisters to risk everything to make it to the 2016 Rio Olympics.
This first-look shows audiences and fans of the duo the heroic extent of the Mardinis’ sacrifice and dedication, despite the many harrowing dangers that threaten to destroy them.
The Swimmers premieres in select theaters and Netflix on Wednesday, Nov. 23.
