The stars — and suspects — hit the red carpet as Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery made its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sep. 10. There’s no word yet on whodunit; maybe it was Daniel Craig in Toronto with the…natty tuxedo?
Rian Johnson’s star-studded follow-up to 2019’s Knives Out is a hotly anticipated new mystery that plunges Craig’s detective Benoit Blanc into a perilous dinner party full of intrigue and, eventually, a bodycount. Set on a billionaire’s private Grecian island, this is no Knives Out clone. Like the iconic Agatha Christie, Johnson chose to send his Southern-fried sleuth on an all-new case, with an all-new roster of shady eccentrics.
In attendance at Glass Onion’s red carpet premiere were none other than Johnson and Benoit Blanc himself, Daniel Craig, along with many of the film’s other castmembers: Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kate Hudson, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick and Kathryn Hahn – all of whom can be seen in our red carpet gallery below. It was pretty bold of this crew to make such a public show of things when at least one of them is wanted for murder.
Here’s what some of them had to say to Tudum about the film and the giddy joys of twisty, keep-you-guessing mystery genre before Glass Onion’s splashy Toronto premiere on Saturday:
“Rian’s just the most fantastic puzzle maker,” Norton says of Glass Onion director Rian Johnson. Adds Odom: “Being a fan of the first movie, I saw Rian’s real love for the ensemble nature of the storytelling.” He’s not the only one. Says Henwick, “One of my favorite movies growing up was Clue, and ever since then, I have been obsessed with trying to get into one.” Mission accomplished.
For her part, Hudson says that one of the joys of making the film was asking: “Are you innocent? Are you guilty? You play into certain things differently for the sake of the roller coaster you want the audience to be on.” Meanwhile, looking around at her A-list castmates, Monáe says: “What I love the most is that I got an opportunity to now call these people family.”

Hahn, however, found a different thrill in filming the movie. “We were able to play both guilty and innocent at the same time. People are all that all the time, all at once. Nobody is as righteous or good or whatever we're projecting to be all the time.”
Still, we’ll save the final word for the conductor of this symphony of sleuthing, director Rian Johnson about what makes the murder-mystery genre so much fun for audiences and armchair detectives: “It gives the audience some expectations and the appearance of a puzzle to solve. You can take that and put it over other genres, and have a lot of fun and play with the form.”
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery hits select theaters on a to-be-determined date and Netflix on Dec. 23. For a taste of the mystery, you can check out the teaser trailer right here. Remember, as Johnson said: “It’s a roller coaster and not a crossword puzzle.”
