Bodies

When a dead body shows up on Longharvest Lane in London, it kicks off an investigation. But that body is not just there in one place or time — and this is more than just a crime story. The same body is in that same sport in 1890, 1941, 2023, and 2053. Bodies is a time-traveling saga that follows four detectives in four different time periods and their four different investigations. The stories of their lives spiral out from there, and start to reveal the why behind the crimp in time that has them all investigating the same body and same mystery.

A Good Girl's Guide to Murder

Nothing is quite what it seems in the tiny English town of Little Kilton, where popular high school student Andie Bell (India Lillie Davies) went missing five years ago. Most residents have accepted the police narrative that Andie’s boyfriend, Sal Singh (Rahul Pattni), killed her before dying by suicide, but Pip Fitz-Amobi (Emma Myers) isn’t so sure of this version of events. The smart and single-minded Pip is certain of Sal’s innocence, and with help from his brother, Ravi (Zain Iqbal), she’s determined to prove it. The six-episode season is based on Holly Jackson’s wildly popular YA novel of the same name — come for the murder mystery, stay for the deeper themes about friendships, family, and growing up.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery

Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) is back! In this second iteration of Rian Johnson’s Knives Out franchise, Blanc and his over-the-top accent head to Greece, where they wind up in the company of a tech billionaire and the group of friends he’s gathered for a murder mystery party on his private island. But when one of the guests winds up actually dead, there’s only one smartly dressed man who can unravel what happened. Full of movie stars (the cast includes Kate Hudson, Dave Bautista, Jessica Henwick, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Madelyn Cline, Janelle Monáe, and Edward Norton), glamour, and a few surprise cameos, it’s the perfect puzzle-box movie experience.

Inside Man

How are the stories of an American criminalist on death row (Stanley Tucci) and a vicar in a quiet English town (David Tennant) related? That’s one of the mysteries in this four-part series from Sherlock creator Steven Moffat. The plots are linked by British journalist Beth Davenport (Lydia West), who comes to an American prison to get help on a story she’s writing. But how? Does this seem like a normal setup? No. But nothing Moffatt creates is truly as it seems, which is the fun of watching his work.

The Lincoln Lawyer

When a fellow defense attorney is murdered, Mickey Haller (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo) inherits his practice — and some of his headache cases, including that of a video game developer (Christopher Gorham) accused of murdering his wife. While trying to untangle the mystery, and also make a comeback himself after an accident and drug rehab, he realizes that he could suffer the same fate as his former (and now very dead) colleague. Why is Haller called the Lincoln Lawyer? Not only is that name the title of the successful Michael Connelly novel on which this series is based, but Haller’s office also happens to be located in the back of a Lincoln Town Car, which leads to some wild car chase scenes around Los Angeles.

Lost Girls

When Mari Gilbert’s (Amy Ryan) daughter goes missing on Long Island, she expects the police to help. When they don’t, she starts a search on her own, which eventually dovetails with the unsolved murders of multiple sex workers. The movie, directed by documentarian Liz Garbus in her narrative debut, is based on a true story — Gilbert became an activist — first told in the book Lost Girls: An Unsolved American Mystery by Robert Kolker. (Garbus has also directed a documentary about the real-life case.) It’s a sad story, but an important one that shines a light on whose murders get attention and justice, and who is too often left in the dark.

Murder Mystery

A cop (Adam Sandler) and a hairdresser (Jennifer Aniston) take a long-awaited trip to Europe. What could go wrong? Everything, of course. When the couple accept a billionaire’s (Luke Evans) invitation to his yacht party, it seems like a dream, and much more luxurious than their planned bus tour. Of course, someone winds up murdered. But who did it? If you like the first film, follow it up with Murder Mystery 2, which finds Nick and Audrey now working as full-time private detectives — not very successful ones, it turns out. They’re also guests at the wedding of Vikram “The Maharajah” Govindan (Adeel Akhtar) — where, of course, there’s a murder. Can they solve it? And save their business? Watch to find out.

Murderville

This spoof series stars Will Arnett as detective Terry Seattle, who manages to solvecrimes despite having a series of seemingly clueless, bumbling partners in this improvisational comedy. Those partners, played by a cast of all-star improv actors including Conan O’Brien, Marshawn Lynch, Kumail Nanjiani, Annie Murphy, Sharon Stone, and Ken Jeong, don’t know what’s going on and need to fill in the blanks — and their lines — on the spot. The plot never goes quite where you expect, which is exactly the point. (A 2022 Christmas special also promises a holiday-themed dose of twists and laughs.)

Reptile

When a realtor is murdered in a Maine home she and her boyfriend had been showing for sale, the question of course is: Who did it? The answer isn’t so simple, as two police detectives (Benicio Del Toro and Ato Essandoh) discover when they start to investigate. They find themselves in a twisted web of sex, money, and betrayal, and uncover more layers of guilt and grime until the true killer is revealed. This all-star cast also includes Justin Timberlake, Alicia Silverstone, and Eric Bogosian, who help turn this crime flick into a tense, twisty thriller.

The Residence

When a dead body turns up during a state dinner in the White House in the Shondaland comedic whodunit The Residence, detective Cordelia Cupp (Uzo Aduba) is called in to sniff out the killer — and with 132 rooms to search and 157 possible suspects, she certainly has her work cut out for her. But Cordelia was called in for a reason. As the most sought-after detective in the world, she’s also the best person for the job. She'll keep her wits about her thanks to an all-star cast — including Giancarlo Esposito, Molly Griggs, and Randall Park.

Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery

Third time’s the charm as Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) investigates another perfectly impossible crime. This one occurs in upstate New York, where a small-town priest, Jud Duplenticy (Josh O’Connor), is in the hot seat for murder unless he can prove who really killed Monsignor Jefferson Wicks (Josh Brolin). Joining forces with local police chief Geraldine Scott (Mila Kunis), Blanc has his work cut out for him with a flock of churchgoers who mix faith and reason, each of whom had a complicated history with the Monsignor. Also featured in the A-list ensemble are Glenn Close, Thomas Haden Church, Kerry Washington, Daryl McCormack, Jeremy Renner, Andrew Scott, and Cailee Spaeny.

The Woman in the Window

In this psychological thriller directed by Joe Wright and co-starring Anthony Mackie, Gary Oldman, Brian Tyree Henry, and Julianne Moore, Amy Adams plays Anna Fox, a child psychologist whose agoraphobia means she knows pretty much everything that’s going on with her neighbors, as observed from her brownstone window. That includes witnessing one, a woman named Jane (Jennifer Jason Leigh) get stabbed to death, but the police don’t believe her and claim Jane’s alive. Did Fox’s drinking and drug use trick her into imagining a gruesome murder? Or did she see what she thought she saw?

The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window

Does this title remind you of something? Maybe a few things? That’s because this dark comedy is a parody of psychological thrillers, especially the trope of a woman who sees something unsettling and then becomes a possible target. Kristen Bell stars as Anna, a woman who thinks she sees a murder — or does she? Don’t let the parody premise fool you, though. There’s a real mystery here, even as the series pokes fun at the genre in a very loving way.
