


When a young and utterly brutal assassin decides to help a vulnerable boy, a ruthless gang will stop at nothing to kill them both. The sword-fighting, martial arts–filled Indonesian film The Shadow Strays, from writer-director Timo Tjahjanto (The Night Comes for Us), follows the deadly hit woman as she slashes through challengers at every turn. The film, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, stars Aurora Ribero, Ali Fikry, and Hana Malasan.

A young assassin prodigy who goes by the code name 13 (Ribero) is part of a deadly organization called the Shadow. When her latest assassination attempt goes awry, she’s suspended and exiled to Jakarta, Indonesia — despite help from her mentor, veteran assassin Umbra (Malasan). While living in a safe house, 13 meets a young boy named Monji (Fikry), and the pair begin to bond. That is, until Monji’s abducted by members of a crime syndicate. Unfortunately for Monji’s kidnappers, 13 will stop at nothing to keep the child safe — no matter how many men she has to kill.

The film takes place in Sea of Trees, Japan, and Jakarta, Indonesia.
