Sometimes in basketball, a foul is just a foul. But in one unforgettable case, it was a clear message. In a never–before-seen clip from the upcoming documentary The Redeem Team, members of the 2008 United States men’s Olympic basketball team relive a shocking play that set the tone for their legendary comeback.
The film, which drops Oct. 7, tells the story of the team tasked with bringing home the gold after suffering a devastating loss at the 2004 Olympics. Featuring previously unaired archival footage and interviews with LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony, Mike “Coach K” Krzyzewski, as well as the late Kobe Bryant, the sports documentary reveals how a group of individual all-stars came together as an unshakable unit. Several players reveal how the experience changed not only their lives but, as James says, “reset the standard of what it means to play basketball in America.”

In the clip, revealed during Tudum: A Netflix Global Fan Event, players recall their Olympic matchup against Spain, the defending world champions at the time — and more specifically, recount Kobe Bryant’s bold decision to tackle Pau Gasol.
“He just went right through the middle of my chest, trying to get right through me,” Gasol says in the clip. “To send a message, not just to me but to his teammates, saying, ‘Hey, this might be my brother, I play with him, we’re close, but I don’t care about anything else but winning.’” During the regular NBA season, as fellow Los Angeles Lakers teammates, the two were close friends. But the Olympics turned Bryant and Gasol into opposing players, each trying to bring home gold for their country.
“It’s like he did that to his teammate, oh my god. We were like, ain’t no way we’re losing this game,” James says. “We’re about to beat the shit outta Spain.” And the rest is history. Check out the clip above, and stay tuned for more from The Redeem Team, which comes out on Oct. 7.
