The trailer for The Most Hated Man on the Internet begins ominously: A woman recalls waking up, looking at her phone and seeing over 200 notifications on a provocative photo she didn’t actually post. The woman is one of hundreds targeted by Hunter Moore and IsAnyoneUp.com, Moore’s website dedicated to posting explicit photos, often without the subject’s consent. This is known as revenge porn, or — as it’s more commonly referred to now — intimate-imagery abuse. The Most Hated Man on the Internet tells the story of Moore’s rise and fall through the lens of his victims and the people brave enough to try to stop him.
The three-part series comes from director Rob Miller and executive producer Alex Marengo from Raw TV, the production company behind true-crime docs like Don’t F**k with Cats and The Tinder Swindler. Marengo says the allure of telling this story was not only to create a snapshot of an earlier, formative iteration of internet culture but also to give the victims a long overdue platform.

“The media absolutely loved Hunter Moore, but no one was listening to the traumatized victims of his revenge-porn website,” Marengo told Netflix. “Now some of them have bravely gone on camera to call out the hurt and abuse Hunter thrived on. “It took an incredibly talented team to build trust with our contributors and not sensationalize this,” he said. “We hope the huge Netflix audience will not only enjoy the ride but also join the growing mass of people calling for an end to online abuse.”

The documentary tells the story of the various crusaders that helped to bring Hunter Moore down, including former marine James McGibney and Charlotte Laws, a suburban mom who learned her daughter’s nude photos were posted against her will on IsAnyoneUp.com. Laws began a battle to take down the site and its founder, Hunter Moore. The Most Hated Man on the Internet has a range of interviews from those negatively impacted by Moore’s website, sharing sensitive details about the consequences the experience had on their lives.

Hunter Moore founded IsAnyoneUp.com in 2010. At the height of his power online, he was a self-proclaimed “professional life ruiner.” He also embraced the label of “The Most Hated Man on the Internet,” a title bestowed upon him by Rolling Stone in a 2012 story written by Alex Morris. Moore sold IsAnyoneUp.com in 2012 to an anti-bullying website (a shocking turn of events that’s depicted in the new documentary). In 2015, Moore pleaded guilty to felony charges of aggravated identity theft and unauthorized access to a protected computer to obtain information for purposes of private financial gain, and he spent more than two years in prison. Initially, Moore agreed to participate in The Most Hated Man on the Internet documentary, but later declined.

The doc features a series of interviews with victims of Moore’s intimate imagery abuses, as well as those who worked to stop him. In addition to the highly sensitive stories told by a handful of the victims, other interviews include Charlotte Laws, anti-bullying activist James McGibney (who also bought IsAnyoneUp.com from Moore) and Rolling Stone journalist Alex Morris.
The nature of this documentary series is graphic, sexual and highly sensitive, with descriptions of sexual acts and suicidal ideation. The Most Hated Man on the Internet contains extensive archival footage of Moore, but to protect the victims, no images were used from the original website. Instead, the explicit imagery in the series intended to re-create IsAnyoneUp.com was sourced with consent from 18+ individuals.
Those interested in true crime will find this documentary compelling, particularly those who are interested in crime stories told through the lens of the victims about their paths to vindication and healing. Watch The Most Hated Man on the Internet if you enjoyed The Tinder Swindler and Our Father.
The three-part series will debut on Netflix on Wednesday, July 27.
