“He’s bought into the possibilities of what both worlds can bring him, both an aristocrat and a criminal,” says James. Eddie’s greatest asset remains what James calls his “superpower” — his mind. But inheriting the Halstead name — and discovering what he can accomplish with it — has awakened something else in him. “That ignites a fiery ambition,” James says. “With inheritance and power, that starts to change his sense of self.”

Stylish, sardonic, sophisticated, and steely, Susie Glass runs the day-to-day operations of her father Bobby’s criminal empire. In Season 1, she surprised new business associate Eddie when she revealed the massive weed operation beneath his family estate. Although the two initially butted heads, they proved to be a formidable team. By Season 2, their operation — and Susie’s ambitions — have evolved.

“In the first season, we explored this tough, very strong, very focused version of Susie where she plays the good soldier,” Scodelario tells Tudum. This season, however, Susie starts wondering, “maybe she could do things differently and maybe she doesn’t need to be underneath her dad’s eye so much,” says Scodelario. She remains fiercely loyal to her family, but Scodelario says there’s a new “rebelliousness” as Susie begins considering what it might mean to branch out on her own.

Her partnership with Eddie is evolving, too. “She’s starting to realize that Eddie isn’t the steady Eddie that she thought he was,” Scodelario says. “She’s seeing that he’s open to being slightly more volatile, and she’s not sure she can control him anymore.”

As the heir apparent to the Halstead estate, Freddy spent much of his life partying and dabbling in disastrous business ventures — which probably helps explain why his father left the title to his younger brother, Eddie, instead. In Season 1, the impulsive, frequently exasperating Freddy became one of the Hornimans’ biggest wild cards as he struggled to adjust to his brother’s newfound authority.

Season 2 finds Freddy in a different state of mind. When viewers meet Freddy again, “he’s very, very serious,” Read says. This change came from realizing they “couldn’t just keep doing the same thing with the character.” Don’t expect another chicken suit.

Eddie’s mother, the dowager duchess of Halstead, appears to be an upstanding member of British aristocracy — part of the horse-riding country set — but she’s hiding a more salacious past. Perhaps that’s why Richardson thinks that if the Horniman family had a Game of Thrones–style motto, it would be “Silence is golden.”

Season 2 peels back a little more of the mystery surrounding Lady Sabrina, including the connection between her and longtime estate gamekeeper Geoff. It’s a relationship Read says the team “really enjoyed” exploring in Season 1 and “wanted to develop” further this time around.

Stoic Geoff is the gamekeeper of Halstead Manor. He knows every inch of the estate and cares deeply for the land and the Horniman family. His defining quality, Jones says, remains an almost old-fashioned sense of devotion. “I still think what he carries around his neck is the loyalty to the family,” he tells Tudum. “So you just see: How much would a man do for loyalty?”

Season 2 adds new layers to the mysterious gamekeeper. Jones compares Geoff to “a very mature bottle of red wine” — a character best revealed slowly. “You just take your time, you smell it, and you sniff it, and you taste it,” he says. “That’s what Geoff’s all about.”

Eddie’s adventurous, liberal-minded sister, Charly, has settled into life as a doting mother to baby Tarquin — though she’s still deeply embedded in the family’s orbit and remains Eddie’s favorite sibling for good reasons.

A former soldier who now serves as equerry to the King, Nanny is also the father of Charly’s baby. He loves Charly and their son Tarquin fiercely.

To hear Winstone tell it, Bobby is a model entrepreneur in charge of his family’s business. But it comes with a warning. “You’ve got to be very careful what you say about the Glasses — and who you say it to,” Winstone tells Tudum. “We’re very stumbly-crumbly about it all. But I’m a businessman, and while I’m away on holiday, my daughter’s running the business for me.”

When Bobby Glass says “holiday,” by the way, what he really means is “prison.” But being behind bars doesn’t necessarily stop him from pulling some strings behind the scenes. In Season 2, the Glass operation has expanded beyond England, and Bobby remains every bit as ambitious — even as he takes a more cautious view of just how far and how fast his empire should grow.

Susie’s younger brother helps her out with the family business when needed, but his real goal is achieving immortality within the boxing ring. Unfortunately, he expends as much energy in the bedroom as he does in the gymnasium, and his amorous exploits are in constant conflict with his burgeoning boxing ambitions. In Season 2, Jack takes on more responsibility in the Glass operation — though neither business nor boxing has done much to curb his extracurricular interests.

Susie’s chief grower and weed specialist is constantly high on his own supply and easily distracted. But his sweet, truehearted nature and cannabis-growing skills mean Susie overlooks some of his glaring deficiencies. In Season 2, Jimmy remains a reliably eccentric presence as the operation expands, and his specialized knowledge of the product may prove more useful than ever.

A London-based grifter who now works for Susie Glass, Gabrielle puts her talent for deception to good use as part of the Glass operation. Cool under pressure and adept at blending in, she’s particularly useful when a job calls for surveillance and subterfuge.

Ultra-wealthy American Stanley Johnston is obsessed with the history, iconography, and architecture of the British aristocracy. In Season 2, Stan’s interest in Eddie evolves into something “much richer,” Read says. His deep fascination with British history, religion, and culture leads him to see a potential in Eddie “far beyond what normal people would see.”

Lord Hawthorne is a well-connected member of the House of Lords  and a familiar face from the aristocratic circles Eddie has inhabited his entire life. As Eddie’s ambitions expand in Season 2, Hawthorne offers him a potential route into a different kind of power: the legit kind.

“We were really keen for Eddie to ascend in both the criminal world and the world of the establishment,” Read says. Hawthorne is “willing to engage with criminals, but on his own terms,” making him both a headache for Eddie and a potentially valuable ally. “We wanted to create a character who was an antagonist, but also one who we could emotionally connect with. And that’s why we felt Hugh was so good for the role.”

Powerful and serious Italian gangster Marco Moretti is the head of a Mafia crime family — and someone whose good graces can take you far. As Eddie and Susie expand their operation into Northern Italy in Season 2, they discover that they’re no longer operating unnoticed. “The Mafia discover what they’re up to, and they have to deal with that one way or the other,” says Read.

At the center of that new criminal landscape is Marco, whom Read describes as “an incredibly dangerous and influential criminal who’s extremely ruthless and elegant.”

Orphaned Italian aristocrat Bella has all the class that you’d expect of her — but she’s also got a sharp edge. Like Eddie, she’s equally at home around nobility and danger, and when the two meet, Read says there’s “an immediate connection.”

The Leopard, Amanda

Bella’s husband and a small-time Italian criminal, Cico has a deep network of contacts. As Eddie and Susie expand their operation into Northern Italy, he becomes their local fixer and guide through an unfamiliar criminal landscape.

“Cico is the boots on the ground in Italy,” Read says. “He’s the man they’re entrusting to help them navigate their criminal enterprise in Italy, but he’s not a man to be trusted.”
