On The Diplomat, Ambassador Kate Wyler (Keri Russell) and her husband, Vice President Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell), “do high highs and really low lows,” as the former points out in the teaser trailer above. And it looks like Season 4 will be no exception when the political drama returns on Oct. 15.

When we last saw our favorite political players at the end of Season 3, Kate and Hal’s marriage was almost in a good place. But Kate starts to realize she may have been double-crossed by her own husband and the President of the United States Grace Penn (Allison Janney). Making matters worse, First Gentleman Todd Penn (Bradley Whitford) points out the closeness between his wife and Hal.

“This season is built on the foursome that is Kate, Hal, Grace, and Todd,” creator, showrunner, and executive producer Debora Cahn tells Tudum. “They’re two couples strapped together in one car on a crumbling roller coaster. Each of them has a professional, public role that’s upending their ability to function as a married person. And there’s a change-partners thing that happens, where the growing bond between Grace and Hal creates a not-so-functional alliance between Kate and Todd.”

Still, in the Season 4 teaser trailer, Kate tells Hal she’s “not trying to get out of the marriage” — rather, she’s “trying to get back in.” So despite the spicy fights Cahn promises are to come, maybe there’s hope for our favorite diplomatic relations? As Kate vows in the clip, “I, Katherine Wyler, take you for better or for worse, worse, and worse.” We’ll have to wait until October to see how much worse things can get.

While the two core marriages threaten to eat each other alive, one catastrophic moment shatters The Diplomat’s other central relationship: the fragile peace Kate has brokered between the US and UK. As she fights to staunch the bleeding, Grace and Hal’s conspiracy to steal Russia’s most powerful weapon could hurtle the United States toward war. Kate and Todd, at best an uneasy pair, unite to stop the Grace-Hal alliance from upending the balance of power abroad and at home.

Executive produced by Cahn, Janice Williams, Alex Graves, Russell, Peter Noah, and Eli Attie, the fourth season of the award-winning series also stars Ato Essandoh, Ali Ahn, and Nana Mensah, with Janney, Whitford, and Mensah promoted to series regulars.
