In this narrative game, you’re a Los Angeles photographer in the midst of a massive professional scandal. With nowhere to go, you wind up somewhere you vowed you’d never return — Serenity, South Carolina. 

It’s a homecoming. Of sorts. 

In your character’s experience, Serenity hasn’t ever lived up to its name. It isn’t as sweet as Southern iced tea; it’s where your family fell apart 30 years ago and the reason you moved across the country and never looked back. Serenity isn’t your final destination on this road called life — it’s a pit stop, and once you’re through with it, you’ll be on your way.

Small towns have a way of luring you back. Call it a charm offensive — or call it lacking respect for boundaries (in the nicest way possible). Over decidedly strong margaritas, Dana Sue, Helen, and Maddie, a close-knit trio of friends who call themselves the Sweet Magnolias, just might win you over.

And if they can’t, well, maybe the promise of romance will, whether it’s someone you have a history with or an exciting new face. After all, even if you decide to flip it, the manor you inherited isn’t going to renovate itself — and an extra set of hands always makes the work more appealing. What kind of game is Sweet Magnolias?

Netflix Stories: Sweet Magnolias is an interactive visual novel in which the main gameplay is making dialogue choices and forming relationships with characters from the heartwarming Netflix show. You’ll create an avatar, pick their pronouns, and play dress-up along the way. The conversations you have, the decisions you make, and the bonds you forge will shape how the story plays out, including whom you form a romantic relationship with. 

As you find your way around the charming town, you’ll spend time at locations from the show like Sullivan’s — Dana Sue’s beloved bar and restaurant — and the Sweet Magnolias’ living rooms, where you’re sure to get a little vulnerable on margarita nights. 

Which cast members from the show are in Sweet Magnolias?

The cast of Netflix Stories: Sweet Magnolias is full of familiar faces. There are even a handful of brand-new friends to make. 

• Helen Decatur: A lawyer who left Serenity for San Francisco only to return to her roots. Along with Dana Sue and Maddie, she bought Francis Wingate’s mansion, planning to turn it into a spa. 

• Dana Sue Sullivan: Dana met the other Sweet Magnolias when they were kids, and they’ve been inseparable ever since. She also owns and runs Sullivan’s, the best restaurant in town: Sullivan’s. 

• Annie Sullivan: Dana’s teenage daughter who, like you, has a conflicted relationship with Serenity. Also like you, Annie is a gifted photographer. Maybe you can help her out. 

• Maddie Townsend: Your photographer and Maddie have a lot in common:You’re both going through life-altering changes that have shaken you to the core. But this doesn’t define either of you — your resilience does. 

• Erik Whitley: This fiercely loyal former EMT has a heart of gold. 

• Mary Vaughn Lewis: The biggest gossip in Serenity, she’s perpetually jealous of everyone else. 

Do I need to watch the show to play Netflix Stories: Sweet Magnolias?

You don’t need to watch Sweet Magnolias to enjoy the mobile game. (We strongly recommend it though.) The game does a great job of getting you up to speed: When your character shows up, everyone in Serenity is extremely eager to tell you about themselves and dish the latest gossip. Word spreads fast in a small town. The downside to coming in cold, however, is that it takes some of the fun out of seeing when and where some fan-favorite characters pop up for the first time. 

When does Netflix Stories: Sweet Magnolias take place?

Netflix Stories: Sweet Magnolias takes place alongside the events of Season 1 of the Netflix series. Dana Sue, Helen, and Maddie are knee-deep in renovations of the Corner Spa, while your main character embarks on a full-scale DIY project of their own — overhauling the manor they’ve inherited. This means you’ll get to relive some of your favorite parts from the show and see them from a different perspective — your very own.
