Purple Hearts star Sofia Carson sure told it like a woman on Oscar night. Accompanied by 14-time Oscar nominee Diane Warren, Carson sang the 2023 Academy Award nominee for best original song, “Applause,” live from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Warren wrote the music and lyrics for the song, which was featured in the film Tell It Like a Woman.
Carson made waves this year for her star turn leading the viral Netflix hit film, Purple Hearts, with art imitating life as she played aspiring singer-songwriter, Cassie Salazar. The film follows Cassie’s unexpected love story with US Marine Luke Morrow (Nicholas Galitzine), who embark on a marriage of convenience that turns into something more after Luke is sent home earlier than expected from deployment.

From her breakout role as Evie in the Disney Channel musical film series The Descendants to her self-titled debut album release in March 2022, the 29-year-old performer is a force to be reckoned with in the music world. Aside from playing Cassie, Carson wrote the film’s entire soundtrack (with songwriter Justin Tranter) behind the scenes in addition to executive producing the film.
Carson told Tudum that she credits her mom, Laura Char Carson (who is also an executive producer on the film), with finding her voice. “We worked together on my career. I call her my head of management. She is my partner. She is my everything.”
