Summary: When 17-year-old Paul joins the Western Front in World War I, his initial excitement is soon shattered by the grim reality of life in the trenches.
Edward Berger’s adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s 1929 novel of the same name marks the first reimagining of this story by a German director. “Our view of war is dominated by sorrow and shame, by devastation and guilt,” he told Netflix. Nothing positive remains, not the tiniest spark of heroism. I found making our history, our background and our attitude to war the driving force behind a film a great challenge. And I thought that this very specific German perspective may well be of interest to people in other countries too. Especially at the moment.”
In February, All Quiet on the Western Front won a record-breaking 7 BAFTAs, including best picture, beating out Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon for the most awards received by a foreign language film.

Nominated for: Best Actress in a Leading Role
Summary: This fictional portrait of Marilyn Monroe (Ana de Armas) boldly reimagines the tumultuous private life of the Hollywood legend — and the price she paid for fame.
De Armas gave her all to this difficult and demanding performance — so much so that she started dreaming of the Hollywood legend at night. Her goal in inhabiting Marilyn was to show a side of her that the public hadn’t seen before.
“What’s interesting was deconstructing that character of Marilyn Monroe and talking about the woman that she was and what she was feeling when those iconic moments were happening,” de Armas told Tudum. “That’s what the movie’s trying to do. It’s going through all these images that we have so integrated and memorized and giving them a whole different meaning, reinterpreting what was going on for her.”
