There’s something magical about the first snow of the season. Snowflakes dust the ground, school is canceled, and snow angels are made. But by the third or fourth winter storm — or blizzard — you might start to feel a bit stir-crazy. You’re likely sick of checking the latest snowfall totals, shoveling your driveway, scraping snow off your car, and wondering if you’re ever going to get feeling back in your hands after running out for the mail. For folks trapped inside by inclement weather, you know that the best thing you can do during a heavy storm is hunker down, grab some snacks, and dig in to a good show.

So if you’re currently being pummeled by old Jack Frost, consider this your formal invitation to leave the snow shoveling for another day. It’s time to curl up on the couch with your softest blanket and dive into this watch list!

The Åre Murders

The Åre Murders takes place in a snowy Swedish ski town called Åre, where two detectives team up in search of a missing teenage girl. The series kicks off when a Stockholm police officer, Hanna (Carla Sehn), moves to her sister’s vacation home after being dumped and put on leave from her job. When a teen girl goes missing, Hanna offers to help a local police officer (Kardo Razzazi) to track her down. In their quest to find the truth, the two detectives discover the small town’s much darker underbelly. The series is based on the novels Hidden in Snow and Hidden in Shadows by Swedish author Viveca Sten.

Black Mirror

This Emmy-winning science-fiction anthology series by Charlie Booker is an engaging snow-day watch, as the episodes span genres and have something for everyone, depending on what mood you’re in. The series explores the depths of human nature, interpersonal relationships, and how technology might impact both of those things. Each episode acts as a standalone story, which means you can watch only a few or binge all six seasons. Season 7 will stream on Netflix in 2025, so it’s the perfect time to rewatch this gripping dystopian series or jump in for the first time.

The Perfect Couple

If you want to virtually escape from the frigid temperatures, warm up with The Perfect Couple, a six-episode murder mystery that takes place in Nantucket over Fourth of July weekend. The series, based on the bestselling novel by Elin Hilderbrand and directed by Emmy and Oscar-winner Susanna Bier, follows Amelia Sacks (Eve Hewson), who’s about to marry into one of New England’s wealthiest families, including an intimidating mother-in-law-to-be (Nicole Kidman). But not long after the festivities kick off, a dead body washes ashore and everyone in the wedding party becomes a suspect.

The Rain

While it might not be due to snow, the characters from the Danish series The Rain know a thing or two about staying inside because of bad weather. The series follows siblings Simone (Alba August) and Rasmus (Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen), who emerge from an underground bunker six years after a deadly rainfall wipes out most of Scandinavia’s population. The duo join a group of other survivors, and together, they must navigate the apocalyptic aftermath of their world, dodging dangerous rainfalls and attempting to forge personal connections as they do.

Black Doves

Set in Christmastime London, Black Doves is the perfect mystery to dig into when the weather outside is frightful. The six-episode spy thriller was created and written by Joe Barton (Giri/Haji, The Lazarus Project) and follows Helen Webb (Kiera Knightley), a spy posing as a politician's wife whose life is upended when she learns her lover has been murdered. To uncover the truth, Helen teams up with an old assassin friend (Ben Whishaw) and the duo work together to find answers and get even.

Alone

As the snow piles higher, you might find yourself wondering, “How would I fare in the wilderness?” The survivor reality competition Alone poses that exact question to its contestants. The series follows survival experts who are stranded in remote locations and forced to face harsh conditions. The contestants are tasked with one main challenge: to be the last one standing. The series might teach you a few survival tips, and it will definitely make you feel grateful for that blanket in your lap.

The Crown

There’s something so satisfying about plunging head-first into a long-running series on a cold, snowy day. This Emmy-winning series inspired by true events is a fictional dramatization of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign and the events that shaped her and her family. The series spans decades and features an outstanding star-studded cast, including Imelda Staunton, Olivia Colman, Claire Foy, Elizabeth Debicki, Vanessa Kirby, Josh O’Connor, John Lithgow, and so many more. If you’re a fan of historical dramas and cross-referencing timelines while you watch, this is the show for you.

The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window

This darkly comedic mystery follows Anna (Kristen Bell), who self-medicates with a mix of pills and booze to cope with the loss of her daughter. Anna is stagnant in her own life until she becomes obsessed with her hunky neighbor and happens to witness a murder that shakes her awake. The series is meant to satirize traditional psychological thrillers, and Bell successfully imbues comedy into her character in a way that makes it both a fun and gripping ride.

The Eternaut

This Argentine sci-fi series takes place in Buenos Aires, where a mysterious, toxic snow begins falling. Anyone who comes into contact with it dies almost instantly. Juan Salvo (Ricardo Darín) and his companions are among the few who survive. They discover there’s nothing natural about the wintry phenomenon after Salvo journeys outside in a homemade protective suit to find his family. The series, created by Bruno Stagnaro and based on Héctor Germán Oesterheld and Francisco Solano López’s 1950s comics, also stars Carla Peterson (Women on the Edge), César Troncoso (The Dreamseller), Andrea Pietra (Tuya), and Ariel Staltari (Recurrence).
