The Return to Space trailer has officially launched into orbit. Directed by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, the duo behind the Academy Award–winning film Free Solo, the documentary follows Elon Musk and SpaceX’s decades-long mission to bring American astronauts to the International Space Station.
“To be out there among the stars, I find that incredibly exciting,” Musk says, over footage of the SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft blasting off in May 2020. “That makes me glad to be alive.”

The SpaceX launch was the first time the US sent NASA astronauts into space since the Space Shuttle program shuttered in 2011. Known as SpaceX Demo-2, or Crew Dragon Demo-2, the mission lasted for 63 days before the spacecraft returned to earth on August 1, 2020. Return to Space opens the curtain and offers viewers a close look into the risky, exciting, headline-grabbing flight — and return journey — with rare footage of Musk, SpaceX engineers, and astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley. The documentary also follows Behnken’s and Hurley’s families as they prepare for takeoff.
“To think about flying rockets again to the space station, it’s unbelievable,” Hurley says. Watch the trailer here, and get ready for liftoff on April 7.
