Depending on who you ask, humans are either Remarkably Bright Creatures, as in the eponymous film starring Sally Field and Lewis Pullman, or they hold the potential to be utter savages, as in Lord of the Flies. The trailers for both Netflix adaptations tease the drama — either heartwarming or terrifying — to come, and they’re joined this week by a diverse collection of first looks at upcoming movies, series, and documentaries that are sure to spark an equally diverse wave of emotions.

Whether you’re wanting a new stand-up special, like Trevor Noah: Joy in the Trenches, or a brand-new stand-up competition series, like Funny AF with Kevin Hart, you’re set for laughs. If you’re looking to be inspired, Lainey Wilson: Keepin’ Country Cool has your back. And for the thrill seekers, a new espionage series, Legends, is on the way.

Legends

In the early ’90s, the UK was losing its battle with illegal drug smuggling. So Her Majesty’s Customs and Excise came up with a plan: a top-secret mission that sent untested officers undercover to infiltrate the most notorious drug gangs. Normal people, plucked from their ordinary lives around the UK, were put through a basic training regime and tasked with building new identities in the criminal underworld. For this wild plan to work, these identities, called legends, had to become their entire reality. This six-episode espionage thriller, created by Neil Forsyth (Guilt) and based on real events, stars Tom Burke (Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga), Steve Coogan (Philomena), Hayley Squires (Beau Is Afraid), Tom Hughes (The English), and Aml Ameen (A Man in Full).

Remarkably Bright Creatures

Based on Shelby Van Pelt’s bestselling novel, Remarkably Bright Creatures follows Tova (Sally Field), a widow who forms unlikely friendships with a curmudgeonly giant pacific octopus, Marcellus (voiced by Alfred Molina), and a wayward musician, Cameron (Lewis Pullman). Unbeknownst to Tova, Marcellus is on a mission to solve a mystery that will lead her to a life-changing discovery. Olivia Newman (Where the Crawdads Sing) directs this drama that also stars Colm Meaney (Alan Partridge), Joan Chen (Tigertail), and Kathy Baker (The Age of Adaline).
