New Releases That Will Leave You Too Stunned to Speak

Stream Worst Roommate Ever, Pieces of Her and more.

    March 4, 2022

It’s a great week to live, laugh and lie. From deceitful (and dangerous) roommates to cheating gay dads, this week’s new releases will have you second-guessing your inner circle. What do you do if you wake up from a drunk night out and are accused of murdering your bestie? Ask Leighton Meester as she seeks out the truth in The Weekend Away. What about witnessing your mom effortlessly slitting someone’s throat at a diner on your birthday? It’s definitely not Toni Collette’s first time doing so in Pieces of Her. Although you can’t trust these characters, we’re not bluffing when we say that these top picks will leave you too stunned to speak. Here are more recommendations for your weekend watch list.

Worst Roomate Ever - New on Netflix 3/4

3/1 Worst Roommate Ever What it is: These roommates aren’t terrible because they won’t do the dishes. The five-part docuseries chronicles roommates with sinister secrets and pasts, from violent con artists to stone-cold killers. Through interviews and animation, Worst Roommate Ever unveils some of the most terrifying cohabitation situations one could ever experience.

Why you should watch it: The stories in Worst Roommate Ever are already frightening, but what makes them even more chilling is the use of animation. Sometimes reenactment scenes in true crime documentaries can err on the side of corniness. With animation, however, the filmmakers are able to depict crime scenes that might be too intense or gruesome, without sacrificing the horror. The hybrid of animation and interviews creates an eerie viewing experience — from blood-stained floors to being buried alive.

The Weekend Away - New on Netflix 3/4

3/3 The Weekend Away What it is: The best-selling novel of the same name by Sarah Alderson comes to life in this new thriller starring Leighton Meester and Christina Wolfe. Beth (Meester) and her best friend Kate (Wolfe) travel to Croatia for a girls’ trip, but their vacation quickly goes south. When Kate goes missing after a night out, Beth is accused of being involved in her disappearance and must regain her memory in order to prove her innocence.

Why you should watch it: Leighton Meester deserves her flowers. In everything from Gossip Girl to The Roommate to “Good Girls Go Bad,” Meester was the blueprint of late ’00s/early ’10s teen pop culture. In The Weekend Away, her character’s all grown up and learning how to foster adult friendships as a new mother. At just 90 minutes (the perfect run time), the thriller offers an escape for those itching to get away for spring break. It also offers nostalgia — watching Meester front and center again — and the adrenaline rush that comes with unexpected plot twists.

The Invisible Thread - New on Netflix 3/4

3/4 The Invisible Thread What it is: In this Italian film, teenager Leone (Francesco Gheghi) sets out to make a documentary about his two dads, Simone (Francesco Scianna) and Paolo (Filippo Timi), to highlight LGBTQ+ rights in Italy for a school project. The plot changes when his dads’ relationship falls apart.

Why you should watch it: While there are many titles that celebrate same-sex relationships, few examine the ripple effects when that love becomes fraught. Leone wants his dads’ relationship to be legally recognized, but his dads actually want to separate. Because neither parent knows who Leone’s biological father is, they’re faced with the uncertainty of parental rights — and not living up to the standards of a picture-perfect gay family. Sure, “love is love,” but sometimes that’s not the case — we need movies about messy and complicated queer relationships too.

Pieces of Her - New on Netflix 3/4

Pieces of Her What it is: After surviving a deadly shooting at a local diner with her daughter Andy (Bella Heathcote), Laura (Toni Collette) is regarded as a hero for stopping the gunman. However, as Andy processes her mother’s actions on that day, she learns more about her mother’s past and buried secrets that begin to resurface.

Why you should watch it: If there’s one thing Toni Collette’s going to do, it’s play a suffering mother who frightens her children. Filled with flashback scenes and gasp-worthy moments (the diner scene in the first episode can be triggering), Pieces of Her is best enjoyed when you know as little as possible about it. If you’ve already read Karin Slaughter’s book of the same name, you’ll still want to stay for the ride because Colette and Heathcote’s performances are gripping.

For fans of: You, Ozark, The Lost Daughter
