Miguel Herrán is a low-maintenance kind of guy: While shooting Money Heist, he’d roll out of bed, zip up a tracksuit and head to the set for work. But sometimes, he was maybe a little too low maintenance — meaning he’d often show up to work without some essentials, um, underneath said tracksuit. Luckily, the show’s wardrobe department was there to help.
"All of the underwear I have is from Money Heist," Herrán reveals to Netflix ahead of the Part 5 premiere. "I'd go in a tracksuit, without underwear. I fall out of bed onto the set. I always show up in a tracksuit and, basically, naked underneath. 'Hey, give me some underwear, some socks, one of those.' "
Those items started to pile up, and today his personal wardrobe consists entirely of undergarments from Spanish brand Punto Blanco, which outfitted the Money Heist set. "Now my house is basically all Punto Blanco. Punto Blanco thermals, Punto Blanco underwear, Punto Blanco socks," Herrán says. "And that's basically the funniest thing I could tell you."
But Herrán took a lot more from his character — computer hacker Rio — than just a drawer full of intimates. The actor, who was 20 when he arrived on the Money Heist set for the first time, finally feels confident in his own skills because of the experience he's gained while filming the bank heist thriller.
"The thing that I most have to thank my character, Rio, [for is that] he's given me the self-assurance to feel like I'm an actor," Herrán explains, detailing how short his résumé felt before he started filming the series. "I felt like I had been very lucky, that I was here because of my luck, and that I didn't have enough talent to keep going for such a long run, to say nothing of a career with any future prospects."
Over time, however, Herrán's confidence has begun to improve: "I've ended up feeling more comfortable, not having to study at home, coming in more relaxed and enjoying it," he says. "So the biggest thing Rio has given me is the ability to enjoy my profession."
