Throughout her career, Kathryn Bigelow has challenged expectations: Can a vampire flick have some Western flair? (Yes, it’s called Near Dark.) Why shouldn’t a shirtless Keanu Reeves chase an equally shirtless Patrick Swayze across gigantic waves in a heist thriller? (He absolutely should, and thankfully he does in Point Break.) What would a war movie look like with a woman behind the lens? (That’s Oscar-winning film The Hurt Locker, which won six Academy Awards, including best director, making Bigelow the first woman ever to win.)

Now Bigelow is teaming up with another genre-bending legend, screenwriter and novelist David Koepp, for a feature adaptation of his upcoming novel, Aurora. The film “follows characters who are coping with the collapse of the social order, set against a catastrophic worldwide power crisis.” Koepp, whose credits include such classics as Jurassic Park, Death Becomes Her and Spider-Man, among many others, will write the script, and Bigelow will direct. And with these two at the helm, it’s probably safe to say that whatever the final result, it won’t be quite what you expect.
