Whisper “Jumanji” to any millennial, and they’ll immediately hear the haunting drumbeats that signal a shocking twist in the 1995 classic about two children playing a cursed board game. For over two decades, the action-adventure movie, which starred Robin Williams, has delivered an irreplaceable combination of fright and fun. (Though the unofficial 2005 spin-off, Zathura: A Space Adventure, did try to match it.) The official continuation of the saga, 2017’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle — now streaming on Netflix alongside the original Jumanji — is distinct in many ways from the ’90s blockbuster.

When students Spencer (Alex Wolff), Fridge (Ser’Darius Blain), Bethany (Madison Iseman), and Martha (Morgan Turner) land in detention, they’re forced to clean out the high school’s basement. There, they discover an old gaming system. Deciding they deserve a break, the four set up the ancient ’90s tech to play a video game they’ve never heard of before: Jumanji. But the second they each choose their avatars — played by Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan — the whole group gets sucked into the cursed game (literally). Dropped into the middle of the jungle, they must survive dangerous predators, scheming archaeologists, bewitched jewels — and each other in order to return to real life. Jake Kasdan (Red One) directs Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, along with its 2019 sequel, Jumanji: The Next Level.
