If you haven’t seen Love Hard, you are missing out on some reimagined holiday tunes — and one unforgettable karaoke scene.
For the holiday heads who have already streamed this catfishing-gone-good love story, we have some news for you: Remember the scene where Natalie Bauer (portrayed by the incomparable Nina Dobrev of Vampire Diaries fame) busts out a cover of Meat Loaf’s “I Would Do Anything For Love” at dive bar karaoke? Or the one where she and Josh Lin (played by Crazy Rich Asians star Jimmy O. Yang) update the questionable Christmas classic “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” on the fly, making it a contemporary consent anthem? (Great stuff.) Well, as it turns out, Dobrev is actually singing in those scenes. So we asked her about it.

“It was very nerve wracking, because I had to go into the studio and lay down the track[s,]” she tells Tudum ahead of the Love Hard premiere. Many fans were surprised to find that Dobrev can sing, though she says her character’s vocal chops were meant to be more amusing than impressive.
“I'm not planning or wanting to drop an album anytime soon. Singing is not my passion, by any means. So when the director reminded me [that it] is meant to be a comedic scene, that my character was not supposed to be a great singer, it took a lot of the pressure off, for sure.”
Still, as we said to Dobrev, we’d totally take that album. “We’re all our own worst critics, but thank you,” she blushes. “It was a really fun scene to shoot on the day, and the comedic backdrop, again, without spoiling anything, was really fun and outlandish.” That it was.
