Kid Cudi’s new animated event Entergalactic started from a very simple place: the hip-hop star’s song “Enter Galactic (Love Connection Part I)” from 2009’s Man on the Moon. “It’s simply just about me meeting this girl that I like, and we’re doing shrooms for the first time,” Cudi says in a clip from Netflix’s annual fan event Tudum. Check out the full clip above, where you can marvel at both Entergalactic’s jaw-dropping, stylized animation and Cudi’s cozy-looking pink jacket.
“This is a Black love story,” says executive producer Kenya Barris in the clip. It’s also a keenly realized portrait of New York City. “We’ve never seen Black people drawn like this; we haven’t seen New York drawn like this,” Barris continues.” The show’s comic book–adjacent visual style turns the city into a candy-colored mirage full of moving graffiti and psychedelic spacescapes.
“I just felt like there’s a void when it comes to Black love stories in the industry,” Cudi says. He filled that void in the only way he knew how: with a musical ballet through the stars, set to a song from his new companion album, also titled Entergalactic. You can get a glimpse at that ballet above.
Kid Cudi also stars in the series, opposite Jessica Williams, Timothée Chalamet, Ty Dolla $ign, Laura Harrier, Vanessa Hudgens, Christopher Abbott, 070 Shake, Jaden Smith, Keith David, Teyana Taylor, Arturo Castro and Macaulay Culkin.
Entergalactic is available to stream on Netflix Sept. 30.
