There’s something strange happening in the streets of Tokyo. People with superhuman strength and a lust for blood are attacking others left and right — and crime fighter Ryo Saeba is on the case. Ryo, a private eye and wannabe ladies man, just lost his friend and co-worker Hideyuki to one of these possessed assailants. Whatever’s causing these assaults — drugs? a virus? — Ryo’s determined to figure it out… no matter how many dangerous men he has to kick square in the face. That is, if he can tolerate his unofficial new parter Kaori, Hideyuki’s pesky sister.
The Japanese live-action — and action-packed — adaptation City Hunter, based on the serial manga by Tsukasa Hōjō, stars Ryohei Suzuki, Misato Morita, and Masanobu Andô. It was directed by Yuichi Satoh (Kisaragi, Poison Berry in My Brain) and written by Tatsuro Mishima (Yu Yu Hakusho, Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead).

Misato Morita as Kaori Makimura in City Hunter
City Hunter follows Ryo Saeba (Suzuki), a so-called sweeper, or mercenary, who trails assailants and solves cases in the shadows of Shinjuku, Tokyo. After accepting a job to find a missing cosplayer, he and his private-eye partner Hideyuki (Andô) chase down a woman who may have answers. The woman, carrying two vials of a mysterious blue substance, gets away — but something’s off about her. She has veins bulging out of her neck, and she barrels across rooftops like a supervillain. Later that night, Hideyuki meets his sister, Kaori (Morita), for dinner. There, another creepy, crazed person attacks and kills Hideyuki — and neither Kaori nor Ryo are able to save him. As the two team up to find out why Hideyuki ended up dead, Hideyuki’s former co-worker Detective Saeko Nogami (Kimura) investigates whether a powerful crime syndicate is to blame.

It takes place in Shinjuku, Tokyo.
