Beyoncé performances are… everything. By all accounts, they’re a near-religious experience. As those who’ve seen her 2023 tour know well, the woman can truly do it all — and her 2019 documentary HOMECOMING: A Film by Beyoncé exemplifies this.
Directed by Beyoncé and Ed Burke, HOMECOMING took home the Grammy for Best Music Film, won an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Variety, and garnered two Emmy nominations — for Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special and for Outstanding Variety Special. When the film premiered on Netflix, Beyoncé also released an album of the performance, HOMECOMING: THE LIVE ALBUM. The music documentary has since become a repeat watch for Beyoncé devotees, with fan choreography for the “Diva/Everybody Mad” remix still going viral all over the damn internet. If you haven’t checked out the film yet, do yourself a favor. Stream it. If you have, do yourself a favor and rewatch — and brace yourself for the chills you’ll get this time around, too.

The documentary features Beyoncé, aka Beyoncé Knowles-Carter; her husband, Jay-Z; her children Blue Ivy, Rumi, and Sir Carter; fellow Destiny’s Child singers Michelle Williams and Kelly Rowland; her dancers — yes, including Les Twins; and her backing singers and band. HOMECOMING also features footage of dance teams and marching bands at historically Black colleges and universities (Beyoncé’s inspiration for her Coachella performance) like Southern University, Jackson State University, Alabama A&M University, Grambling State University, Florida A&M University, North Carolina A&T University, Hampton University, and Alabama State University.

In April 2018, Beyoncé became the first Black woman to headline Coachella. The film gives a behind-the-scenes look at the star’s planning and rehearsals for her two concerts at the festival, which showcase elements of HBCU performances — like stepping, dance team, and marching band. Beyoncé talks about her vision, her work ethic, and all the intensive preparation that led up to her historical performances. She also discusses her emotionally and physically taxing pregnancy the year prior — which led to her postponing what would have been her first time headlining Coachella — before giving birth to her twins Rumi and Sir.

The film takes place at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, held at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California.
