It’s time to retire the outdated idea that your golden years revolve entirely around leisure. That’s certainly not the case for charismatic ex-spy Paul Bannerman.

Netflix and AMC Studios officially announced the green light of Bannerman, a co-produced drama series. Based on popular spy novels by John R. Maxim, the show will follow Paul Bannerman, a lethal covert operative who convinces a group of the world’s deadliest assassins to quit the spy game for a chance to lead normal lives in the suburbs of Connecticut. But old enemies, bad habits, a paranoid government, and an unrelenting ex-cop make retirement their most difficult mission yet.

Craig Silverstein (Nikita, Turn: Washington’s Spies, Pantheon, Percy Jackson and the Olympians) will showrun, write, and executive produce Bannerman alongside Shane Black (Lethal Weapon, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Iron Man 3), who co-wrote the premiere and will direct the first two episodes. Greg Nicotero (The Walking Dead, Creepshow, Pulp Fiction, Casino) and Brian Witten (Creepshow) will also serve as executive producers.

Bannerman is the first co-production between AMC and Netflix. It will premiere on AMC in the US and Canada and will become available on Netflix in the US and Canada 90 days after the premiere of the season finale on AMC. Netflix and AMC will jointly premiere each episode in Australia, New Zealand, and Spain, with Netflix debuting the show exclusively everywhere else in the world.

Bannerman is a smart, high-octane thrill ride of a series, powered by an extraordinary creative team,” says Dan McDermott, chief content officer of AMC Global Media and president of AMC Studios. “This is the perfect premium drama to kick off our first co-production with Netflix, and we are thrilled to continue evolving and expanding our partnership by jointly developing and producing select original series for our respective platforms.”

In the Bannerman book series, which spans five novels, retiree Paul Bannerman finds himself living in a quiet suburban town, but he’s soon pulled back into the gritty and suspenseful world he’s trying to escape. Matters are made more complicated when his girlfriend’s father, a grizzled former NYPD officer named Raymond Lesko, comes crashing into his life, suspecting Paul is not who he says he is.

The twisted story joins Netflix’s slate of standout drama series. This year, His & Hers and Harlan Coben’s I Will Find You broke into Netflix Most Popular list with 112.9 million views. Plus, Season 2 of the anthology series BEEF led all limited series with 16 Emmy nominations, securing first-time nominations for Carey Mulligan, Charles Melton, and Youn Yuh-jung. Still to come this year are an adaptation of John Steinbeck’s East of Eden and The Altruists. Other upcoming prestige series include Rabbit, Rabbit, Trigger Point, Kennedy, So Far Gone, The Roman, and The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey.

Be sure to check back here soon for updates on Bannerman’s unexpected mission.
