Do you hear the click of designer heels? Well, that’s the sound of Oscar nominee Taraji P. Henson strutting into the Why Did I Get Married movie franchise just in time for its hotly anticipated third installment, premiering Sept. 9.
Sixteen years after its predecessor’s debut, Why Did I Get Married Again? — written and directed by co-star Tyler Perry — takes the dramedy’s beloved friend group to Italy. Angela (Tasha Smith) and Marcus (Michael Jai White) summon their nearest and dearest to Europe for their daughter Jasmine’s (Armani Greer) nuptials to her athlete fiancé, Wesley (Everett Osborne). The football phenom just so happens to be the son of Roselyn (Henson), a successful businesswoman and longtime member of the Married friend group — although viewers are meeting her here for the first time.

As suitcases are packed and friends become family, secrets inevitably bubble to the surface. In the trailer, unexpected lovers are caught canoodling behind closed doors, tensions spark, and someone even gets punched in the face. And don’t even get the crew started on Mike’s (Richard T. Jones) new wig. It’s no surprise that Angela’s BFF, Sheila (Jill Scott), saves the mother of the bride a glass of wine … only for Angela to say she would much prefer “a bottle.”

At the heart of the drama is the chasm between perception and reality. In the trailer, Kenya (Laya Deleon Hayes) — daughter of Terry (Perry) and Dianne (Sharon Leal) — tells her parents (and their pals), “Your marriages are so perfect.” Finally, Sheila admits, “We didn’t tell you how unperfect we really are.”

The upcoming dramedy is the third film in Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married? series. The original, Why Did I Get Married?, debuted in 2007, and follows four couples on their annual marriage-building vacation. The couples include Angela and Marcus, Terry and Dianne, Sheila and Mike, and Patricia (Janet Jackson) and Gavin (Malik Yoba). Confessions abound as the group is stuck together on their mountainside getaway. By the end of the movie, Sheila leaves a philandering Mike for the kindly Troy (Lamman Rucker).
Then, in 2010, Why Did I Get Married Too? premiered, following the group on a trip to the Bahamas with explosive —and fatal — consequences.
In Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married Again?, the couples reunite in celebration as Marcus and Angela’s daughter prepares to tie the knot. After being apart for quite some time, they quickly learn that as much as things change, they also stay the same. Realizing their children have grown up to be so much like them, they must reflect on the examples they’ve set and ask themselves that age-old question: Why did they get married … again?
