If you were a fan of the original Broadway musical or are a new convert after watching the Netflix film debut this week, everyone can relate to the trials of turning 13 in13: The Musical. With music and lyrics by Jason Robert Brown, the songs capture the angst of growing up and not knowing who you are or want to be yet, whether you’re moving to a brand-new place or just want to kiss your crush for the first time. Plus, if you were keeping tabs on the Great White Way in 2008 when the show hit Broadway, you might remember that Ariana Grande was one of the original theater kids of 13.
Tudum has the official tracklist of 13: The Musical songs that, once you watch the movie, you’ll never take the “Opportunity” to get out of your head:
The musical follows Evan Goldman (Eli Golden) as he moves to small-town Indiana from New York City after his parents’ divorce and his attempts to fit in while planning for his upcoming 13th birthday celebration, his Bar Mitzvah. He soon meets new friends like Patrice (Gabriella Uhl) and Archie (Jonathan Lengel), but once school starts, he’s entranced by the popular crowd of jocks and cheerleaders like Kendra (Lindsey Blackwell) and Lucy (Frankie McNellis). But no matter what clique they’re in, all the 13 kids have musical numbers they perform to help get them through.
During filming, the cast was always singing off camera. As to who burst into song the most, Golden wagers it was “Frankie [McNellis] or me! Or maybe Nolen [Dubuc, who portrays football player Malcolm]. It would just be TikTok songs, weirdly. Or Ella [Uhl] and Jonathan [Lengel]. They were always singing some really cool musical theater number or something.”

Uhl echoes that “Jason Robert Brown’s music is so amazing, it’s timeless, and it definitely gets in your ear, so we were always humming whenever we weren’t filming.”
Nerves ran rampant on the set, though, as many of the cast have showstopping numbers that they headline. Dubuc, who takes the lead on “Bad Bad News,” notes that “preparing for that... was definitely more challenging than the rest of them. Definitely nervous, but definitely still exciting!”
For McNellis, her big cheerleading number “Opportunity” was the most nerve-wracking “because it’s me,” she tells Tudum. “I had to do it, and at the end of the song, I have to do a lift and that was [my] first time ever doing cheer. The camera is on me the whole time, and Liz Gillies was the original Lucy [on Broadway], so I’m like, ‘Oh my God, I cannot mess this up. I have to do good just for her.’ I really hope she likes it because that was, like, really cool!”
McNellis wasn’t the only one eager to do their original Broadway counterparts justice. Luke Islam [who plays Carlos Iglesias] notes that “Brand New You” was his favorite song to perform “because I am the biggest Ariana Grande fan, and she is the one that originated that song. And I have her solo! So I was like, ‘Oh, this is a moment. She’s going to be watching for this.’ That song has such a good message for the end of the movie and it’s so well done — so jazzy and upbeat. I love it!”
Blackwell says that “definitely ‘Tell Her’ ” was the song that had her reeling before shooting. “I was nervous to perform that one because it’s a big moment for Kendra and Brett and it is also one of my favorites!”
But as for which song speaks the most to what it feels like to be the grueling age of 13? Lengel considers it a no-brainer: “definitely ‘13,’” he tells Tudum. “You know, it’s talking about how ‘I wanna fly, wanna run, wanna drive.’ You’re at this age when you wanna do all of these things and you’re not really able to do them yet and it kind of gives you a sense of curiosity of what’s to come in the future of your life.”
Step back into your teenage years and sing along to these angsty numbers after you watch 13: The Musical, now streaming on Netflix.
