Penn Badgley: Hello, Tudum. Welcome to the set of You. It's Season 5, and I'm gonna tell you a few set secrets.
[upbeat, mysterious music playing]
Penn Badgley: First one is, is there a spare key in the cage? Well, I mean, if you have watched the first season, I believe it was somewhere in here.
[CLIP] Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley): When Mooney locked me in, I learned a lesson. Hide a spare key so you can get out of the goddamn cage.
Penn Badgley: The fifth season, it's a little bit of a spoiler…
[siren wails]
Penn Badgley: Earmuffs. It's inside Joe's body.
[Joe exhales]
Penn Badgley: There's not much for me to hide here. I don't have anything to hide. But I am very hydrated. So behind a fake pillar, you'll always find something like this. If it's not, of course, a sustainable metal canister. Have we lost viewers yet? Shall I keep talking about this? Nah, let's keep going.
[mysterious music plays]
Marcos Siega: We are here in the Mooney's set. This is a really special place for me, 'cause season one, I was here, and we put this thing together. But if you go to the real bookstore, the interior looks nothing like this. And every time I go to the real location, I go there often when we're scouting, there's always fans who show up, and they're always standing inside saying, “Why did you change it?” to the owners of the real bookstore.
[knife slices]
[CLIP] Bronte (Madeline Brewer): Is the rich guy afraid of things other people have touched?
[CLIP] Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley): This is literally a used bookstore.
[mysterious music plays]
Madeline Brewer: Little secret. We often shoot coming through here. And so, all of these books, for clearance reasons, they have fake covers. So, believe it or not, The Pipes Kink is not a real book, unfortunately for us all. Same with this, The Runaway Lovers, which is by Andja, who is actually one of our brilliant wardrobe department members. A particular favorite of mine is just right here. A Guide To Northeastern Trees. And what is it really? It is a beautiful little book. One of my favorites, called Does It Fart? "The definitive field guide to animal flatulence." We have everything here at Mooney's.
[mellow music plays]
Jackie Wertz: The whole art department worked really hard in getting the books and just making sure that everything from season one is here. So even down to these, like, bookmarks, you know, we had to recreate. And it was a fun thing to kind of go back and look and say, "Oh we need that," or, "They had this," and getting those and making sure that they were incorporated.
[CLIP] Benji Ashby (Lou Taylor Pucci): Hey, man. I'm thinking maybe…
Ryan Gargiulo: One thing we had to source from season one is the mallet, which also plays in Season 5.
[Kate gasps, grunts]
Ryan Gargiulo: We actually found the original one from a collector, and, uh, we managed to source it, and then we managed to make a foam one. I love it because it's from the pilot, and we matched it, which is pretty cool.
[knife slices]
[CLIP] Bronte (Madeline Brewer): What's… in there?
[CLIP] Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley): It's just some old storage, but it's a little bit dangerous, so… Stay out.
[mysterious music playing]
Penn Badgley: Typically, a door would be here, and this leads to the basement, but this is not a basement. Uh, there are no stairs here. This is where the steps would be. So this is where, if I was… I was stepping down backwards, which is very strange to do. Listen to how creaky this door is. [door creaking loudly] Right? You couldn't ask for a creakier door.
[upbeat music plays]
Adam Scher: We were tasked with matching everything from the bookstore to what was created in season one. And one of the main visual features of the bookstore is the spiral stair. And at the end of the day, there's really only one company that does them. So it's not the exact spiral stair, but it's the exact model and came from the exact vendor. And that story repeats itself kind of all over the bookstore and the basement because some of the decorating elements and the scenic elements, they're very, very unique.
[knife slices, loud rattle, Bronte gasps]
[CLIP] Bronte (Madeline Brewer): [softly] Holy shit.
[dark music plays]
Adam Scher: The basement where the cage is, it's like the finishes down there are 40 or 50 years old. Early on, I told our scenic team, our painters that we have to really get into aging this. And they aged it once, and I came and I said, "Let's do it again." And then we had a visit from our producer, and we did a walk-through. His first comment was, “So, when are you gonna age this?” [chuckles] So we went back again and worked paint and pigment and dirt and soot into every single corner at least five times to get it to the point where it feels now, when you walk down there, it actually feels like an old basement.
[knife slices]
[CLIP] Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley): You can be the new you and the old you. It's all just you.
[dark music playing]
Brandon Heath: Hi, I'm Brandon Heath. I'm Penn Badgley's stand-in on the show, and I also read all of Joe's thoughts while we shoot.
Brandon Heath: [as Joe] Come on, you're not a real writer. Kate read your words, your vulnerable, messy fantasies, and told you to burn them.
Brandon Heath: A lot of our show takes place in Joe's head, and I read the things that Joe's thinking, so the crew and the other actors can all know what's going on while we shoot.
Brandon Heath: [as Joe] I have been searching for you for a very long time, Bronte.
Brandon Heath: The cast will perform the scene, and I'll find someplace to hide, usually behind a couch or behind a counter. Wherever I can find that's out of the way of the cameras, that's where I go.
[knife slices]
Penn Badgley: Well, thank you, guys, for coming along for a little tour of the set and its secrets.
[CLIP] Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley): I'll have to ask you to… keep this between us.
