[curious music plays]
Penn Badgley: Hello, Tudum. I'm Penn Badgley. We are on the set of You. It's the fifth and final season, so we’re gonna show you around, before they have to tear it all down.
[upbeat mysterious music playing, typewriter bell dings]
Penn Badgley: A typical day usually consists of, you come to set, you rehearse. It's a lot of laughs and giggles, usually, because I've got very few lines, but I've gotta, you know, like, strangle somebody, or stab them. I go to hair and makeup, and then I… I walk around these corridors. And I'm just sort of as I am now, just sort of light and free and carefree. And then I go in there, and then I rage.
[CLIP] [Joe yells]
Penn Badgley: I mean, to be honest, my day is better if it starts with prayer and meditation. And when I don't have that, it is harder to be Joe. It's harder to rage when I don't have that grounding. But that starts at home. Whoa. You go ahead. It's all good. It's all good. This is what happens. There's crew members here.
[upbeat mysterious music continues]
Penn Badgley: This is interesting. This is where the set of Gossip Girl was. The Humphrey loft was back here. So not only is Joe's bookstore here, but Dan Humphrey's "poor" extremely wealthy loft was in here. This screen, I don't think it's on. But this massive wall you see here, these are all LED screens. And at lunch, some of the crew members will play video games on it. And it's completely overwhelming and insane. But, uh, on that screen, you have York Avenue, because that's where the real Mooney's bookstore is. So they've captured, at all hours of the day, like 15-minute loops of that street. So that if you stand to either side of it, it's kind of like you're there. It's disorienting.
[upbeat music plays]
Penn Badgley: Oh my goodness, it's Charlotte! Come here, come here, come here! You're gonna be in this. Are you okay with being on Netflix?
[both laughing]
Penn Badgley: Come here.
Charlotte Ritchie: How are you?
Penn Badgley: I’m good. How are you?
Charlotte Ritchie: It's been a while. I’ve got nothing to say. Okay, see ya.
Penn Badgley: [laughs] That's Charlotte Ritchie. The inimitable, very talented Charlotte Ritchie, who can play piano and sing beautifully, and is really a comic actor. She's so funny. We laugh a lot together.
[CLIP] Kate Lockwood (Charlotte Ritchie): What's gotten into you this morning?
[CLIP] Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley): It's the burrito.
[CLIP] Kate Lockwood (Charlotte Ritchie): [laughs] Oh my God.
Penn Badgley: Coming back to New York, it's nice because it's actually my home, New York City, so it's nice for me just practically. Also, Joe feels most at home in New York. But also, **** that guy. He doesn't need to be home. He doesn't need to feel anything. [laughs]
[CLIP] Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley): Ouch.
Penn Badgley: This is the entrance to Mooney's bookstore. Come on in.
[upbeat music playing, typewriter bell dings]
Madeline Brewer: Hi, Tudum. I'm Madeline Brewer. We are here at Mooney's bookstore, which is one of my favorite sets. Being a fan of the show from season one especially, it was so incredible to be able to come in and to see some of the most iconic sets and locations.
Penn Badgley: This is a really sweet dog. I don't know whose this is or if it's real, but he's lost, and his name is Buckwheat. Anybody sees him, let us know. Here's Joe's office. Some fantasies have happened on this chair. There's a lot of nonfunctional things in this office, 'cause all he ever does is fake inventory. This man only ever in this bookstore has had a clipboard, like he's doing inventory.
[CLIP] Bronte (Madeline Brewer): What are you doing here?
[CLIP] Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley): Inventory.
Penn Badgley: That's the only work he ever does. [laughs]
Madeline Brewer: This is a part of the bookstore that has some great books, and I've already taken a few of them home. Eugh! Don't tell.
Penn Badgley: Here I have the heads of famous authors. One of them this season is used as a weapon.
[CLIP] Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley): Hey!
[CLIP] Bronte (Madeline Brewer): Wait! Wait, wait! Don't, please. Dickinson. That'd be a way to go out.
Madeline Brewer: There's so many different genres here. Books I've never heard of, books I've been wanting to read for ages. There's a book for everything.
[ding]
[CLIP] Kate Lockwood (Charlotte Ritchie): Come in.
[typewriter bell dings]
Charlotte Ritchie: Hello, Tudum. I'm Charlotte, and I play Kate. And this is Kate's apartment. It's been beautifully designed by the art department. I would live here is the obvious thing to say. I really would live here. And I'm very jealous of Kate. Her life is stressful.
[CLIP] Kate Lockwood (Charlotte Ritchie): My lawyer will rip your asshole apart.
Charlotte Ritchie: I wouldn't take that bit, but the apartment I could keep. Uh, the flowers aren't real. [dinging] And the staircase doesn't go anywhere. And that's showbiz. And if you look up, there's no ceiling. This is my living room. It's really nice, as you can see. There's whiskey, but I don't think it's real. The one that we drink is unsweetened ice tea. Uh, my skyline. [laughs] It's New York City. It's obviously not. It's on the first — ground floor. You guys say "first floor." And when it's nighttime, it sort of all twinkles, which is pretty cool.
Penn Badgley: New York City isn't real. These are the lights that illuminate this backdrop to make it not look like a backdrop. This corridor is usually lit of just all fluorescent bulbs, which, I don't know where else you would see that. I like it.
Charlotte Ritchie[whispering]: You guys wanna see the kitchen? Come this way. So this is the kitchen. It's so nice. Lots of leaning, lots of brooding. High-tension scenes in this kitchen. Also… [hollow thumping] Not real. Not real. Nothing you see is real. Actually, my hair is also not real. I have an amazing hair and makeup team that do a lot of heavy lifting. So, typical day, I have extensions, and I have beautiful makeup, and full blow-dry.
[CLIP] Maddie Lockwood (Anna Camp): Mmm.
[CLIP] Kate Lockwood (Charlotte Ritchie): You look amazing. I need the name of your hairdresser. I don't know what I'm doing with mine these days.
[typewriter bell dings]
Kat Drazen: Hi, Tudum! Welcome! This is Hair and Makeup. Hi, Kat Drazen here. Head of Hair.
Kimberly Amacker: Kimberly Amacker, head of Makeup.
Kat Drazen: And Mixon, our mascot, and number-one on the call sheet, right here.
[dog whimpers]
Kimberly Amacker: Well, this is where Penn comes to do his facial hair in the morning. He's very simple. He doesn't like a lot of fuss.
[CLIP] Maddie Lockwood (Anna Camp): You're a charming white man with really great hair, so the work is mostly done for you.
Kimberly Amacker: It's been a lot of fun, and I think this is one of the best casts we've worked with too.
Kat Drazen: So this is the Hair side. Typically, after Makeup, they come over to Hair, our actors, and we start to put them in character. We do use a lot of hair and wigs on this show. This is just a small amount.
[CLIP] Maddie Lockwood (Anna Camp): What do you say I get us another drink, Boo-Boo?
Kat Drazen: This is the hair that's used every day on Anna Camp for her Maddie character. And then, our show, which is stunt heavy when it comes to killing, and running through woods, and escaping, we have to do a lot of matching with stunt doubles. So this is our Kate stunt double wig. This'll be flashing by camera in order to trick the audience that it's actually Kate. It's really important that we start the day off on a positive note so all of our talent that comes in feel good. They can get into character, they have their own space, and usually have a pretty good day once they walk out the door.
[bells ding]
[CLIP] Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley): What is that?
[CLIP] Bronte (Madeline Brewer): I found it on the street. Can you believe that?
[typewriter bell dings]
[upbeat, mysterious music playing]
Jackie Wertz: Hi, I'm Jackie Wertz. I'm the co-prop master.
Ryan Gargiulo: I'm Ryan, the other co-prop master.
Jackie Wertz: A typical day on set, we check with the director, we make sure we have everything, and then we just run through the order of the day and get whatever anyone needs at any given time.
Ryan Gargiulo: We're usually in the prop truck. Pretty much, if you want anything, we could find it in the prop truck. So, in all these bins, you name it, we have it. We have watches, rings. We have fake guns, fake police badges, headphones. You name it, we have it.
[CLIP] Bronte (Madeline Brewer): I think that you can learn something here.
Jackie Wertz: Each character has its own bin, so we can always reference back, get what we've used in a previous episode that pertains to that character or set. Here's the established Mooney's bin. So everything is labeled. This was a fabricated book we had fun making. Title designed by our amazing writers.
[CLIP] Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley): Ooh. What happened to Ibsen?
[Jackie laughs]
Penn Badgley: Hot set. I love every season's crew. We have a different one every season, which is very rare for a television show. And they're an incredibly talented bunch.
[upbeat music playing, typewriter bell dings]
Catherine Riley: Hello, Tudum. I'm Katie Riley, the costume designer of You season five. This is kind of where I get my brain cranking with visuals, looking at different iconic fashion looks and how we can realize them on our characters. It could be something so small as even, like, we love the idea of a belt, but is it that belt that's right for our character Joe? And then it involves maybe acquiring 50-75 belts sometimes to find the one.
[dark music plays]
Catherine Riley: The famous blue baseball cap. You'd think it's just a baseball cap. You'd go to the store and buy a navy baseball cap. But no, no, no. We, I think at one point, had 85 different ball caps in to find the ball cap of season five. So we have lots of our costume pieces up here. And then we also work out of our wardrobe truck. We started to fit some new looks for Joe.
[CLIP] Bronte (Madeline Brewer): Prince Chivalry.
Catherine Riley: You can see, we've got a lot of navy and black going on this season, which is fun, and dark, and broody, and very stalker. Over here, we have one of our new characters this season, Maddie.
[CLIP] Maddie Lockwood (Anna Camp): Hi! Boo-Boo!
Catherine Riley: Maddie wears a lot of pink, and, uh, we kind of went with an elevated Barbie girl for her style icon. We just finished a fitting with Bronte. We actually recently had some new belts made for her, which are really exciting. We have a fabulous leather guy who crafted these from vintage leather and vintage leather stamps to really make them special and unique. Thanks for stopping by!
Penn Badgley: All right, that's a wrap! Thanks for coming along. I've gotta go.
[music fades]
