Iñaki Godoy: Hey, what’s up, Tudum? I’m Iñaki Godoy, and I play Luffy in Netflix’s new series, One Piece. And I’m going to walk you through my first day and last day on set. Let’s do it.

Iñaki Godoy: Hut … In this scene, we just got into Shells Town. Luffy wants to get a map to the Grand Line, and Koby wants to enlist to the Marines.
[CLIP] Iñaki Godoy (as Luffy): I didn’t know there were so many pirates.
Person: There are way worse pirates in Grand Line.
Iñaki Godoy: We were filming in South Africa at Cape Town Film Studios. Obviously, there’s a lot of very talented people, but they also did some pirate shows before, so they already had ships, and, like, a lot of people that knew how to work in pirate-themed projects. That’s why we were there. It was a very beautiful place. The weather’s pretty nice. It gets a little bit windy, so with the vest, it can get a little bit chilly. It was pretty hot on my first day, actually. It was not super cold. Maybe it was because I am pretty hot too, right? OK. That was a terrible joke.
[CLIP] Iñaki Godoy (as Luffy): Where’s my face?
Iñaki Godoy: I know, right, Luffy? Where’s his face? That’s what I’m talking about. Well … Only one way I’m gonna get inside that base. And it’s not …
[both Iñaki Godoy and Iñaki Godoy (as Luffy):] … on an empty stomach.
[both] Come on.
Iñaki Godoy: It was a very exciting day. It was also a day in which I was very nervous. I obviously wanted to honor Luffy and honor One Piece, and I knew it was a big responsibility. And then I just get here and there’s like a bunch of Marines, this giant town that they just built for the show, and I’m just there with my straw hat. And now it’s like, well, it’s time to be Luffy. The main thing for Luffy, at least for me, is that he always has fun. If I was able to have fun and enjoy shooting, then that would translate into my character.

Iñaki Godoy: Wow, the last scene. The Kuro fight scene. I was having a lot of fun filming these fight scenes. The way he moves and everything. I did a lot of my stunts. If you see my face, that’s me. But if you don’t see my face, that’s my amazing double Cameron. And he is amazing, and he makes Luffy fight like a pirate. Before filming One Piece, I didn’t really have any stunt experience. The stunt team are amazing, and they taught me a lot of things. By the time I did my last fight scene, the stunt team knew they could trust me, and I knew that I could trust myself to do crazy, creative things.

[CLIP] Iñaki Godoy (as Luffy): Gum Gum …
Iñaki Godoy: Oh yeah, the Gum Gum … Bell! Oh my gosh. I loved doing that last move.
[heroic music accelerates, fades]
Iñaki Godoy: It was a really emotional day in a lot of ways. I was really excited about finishing this massive project, but I was also really sad because I was gonna miss my friends. And most out of anything, I was gonna miss Luffy. On my first day of shooting, I was pretty nervous. On my last day of shooting, I was also nervous. But, I knew I had it under control. The more I got into my character, the more I played him, he impacted me in a lot of ways. He pushes me to be the best version of myself. So I was really sad to have to leave my straw hat for a while. Everybody put a lot of effort into bringing this story to life. One thing that really helped me out with filming was knowing that I could trust my team, that they would take care of me. It’s really awesome when you have a team that you know you can trust. Luffy came to life because of all of us. Well, hopefully, that gave you a behind-the-scenes look into all of the work that went into this show. So don’t forget to check out One Piece, streaming now on Netflix. Go check it out!
