    March 28, 2023

An unnamed, stone-faced woman dressed all in black travels from hotel to hotel with her wide-eyed and devoted teen daughter, Bambi. The pair stay at the best rooms in luxury hotels across Turkey, often for weeks at a time. But Bambi’s mom is paranoid — very paranoid — that someone’s out to get them. And it seems someone is… as evidenced by the arrival of the cops at the first hotel we see them in. From The Protector director Umut Aral, Who Were We Running From? explores a complicated, codependent relationship between a mother and daughter on the run from their mysterious pasts.

What happens in Who Were We Running From?

Bambi and her mother — an intimidating woman suspicious of everyone she encounters — have been on the run for a while, staying in luxury hotels, keeping on the move, never staying at the same place twice. They have an endless supply of incredible clothes and cash. But Bambi’s mother, desperate to secure a safer future for her daughter, senses a threat wherever they go. Hotel staff becomes suspicious and investigates the peculiar pair, and the cops aren’t far behind. When dead bodies start showing up and evidence seems to point to Bambi’s mom, will Bambi escape unharmed?

What does Bambi have to do with Who Were We Running From?

Bambi, a Life in the Woods is the 1923 novel by Austrian author Felix Salten that was the basis for the 1942 Disney classic. The novel plays a major role in Who Were Were Running From? — and not just because of Bambi’s name. The two characters share an intense love for the book and its story of the bond between a protective parent and a child who must eventually learn to be independent. This reflects the show’s themes as Bambi begins to question her life.

Where does Who Were We Running From? take place?

The film takes place in several photogenic hotels and cities across Turkey, including in Antalya, on the Mediterranean coast, and Cappadocia, in the mountainous interior.

Where can I learn more about Who Were We Running From?
