    Happy Father’s Day!

Last month brought Mother’s Day, and now we’re back with its annual sequel: Father’s Day weekend is here. As with its May predecessor, the holiday inspires its own brand of greeting-card cliches (Tools! Ties! Golf! Grilling!) — along with an array of feelings. But no matter what your outlook on fatherhood or the Sunday devoted to it may be, there’s a stream to carry you through this weekend like a little kid on its shoulders.

Choose what speaks to you among a wide variety of portrayals of dads (or dad figures), whether that’s a moving documentary, a trio of variously tense dramas, or a sitcom packed with warmth and laughs. Happy Father’s Day!

But first, what’s new on Netflix?

More high-stakes hijinks from a dynamic duo. Season 2 of Nick Santora’s action comedy FUBAR has landed on service, bringing back Arnold Schwarzenegger and Monica Barbaro as a father and daughter who discover that they both secretly work for the CIA — and must work through their baggage while carrying out dangerous assignments together. Not accepting that mission? Brace yourself for the story of a true-life tragedy, and watch Mark Monroe’s new documentary Titan: The OceanGate Submersible Disaster, which traces what happened with the 2023 implosion of the vessel that set out to explore the deep-sea wreckage of the Titanic.

If you have just a night …

Make it a night to remember. The heartrending Peabody Award–winning 2024 documentary Daughters sets the stage for just that, as directors Natalie Rae and Angela Patton focus on a group of incarcerated men who, as part of a special fatherhood program in a DC jail, get to attend a father-daughter dance with their young daughters. The documentary follows the girls at home and their dads on the inside in support group meetings and suit fittings, all anticipating their reunions at the big event; you’ll be breaking out the tissues when they break out their dancing shoes.

If you have a whole day …

Learn your lessons. Take in a mini-marathon of indie dramas about fathers (or father figures) trying to show up for their kids (or kid figures!) in whatever ways they can. First, cue up Derek Cianfrance’s 2012 epic The Place Beyond the Pines, in which Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper star as, respectively, a stunt biker turned bank robber and a cop who have a fateful confrontation, the ramifications of which continue to echo years later when their sons meet as teenagers. Next, take a ride with the two-hander Daddio (2023), written and directed by Christy Hall. Sean Penn plays the title role, a New York cab driver who offers some fatherly advice to a passenger (Dakota Johnson) on a long drive home from the airport. And finally, turn to Noah Baumbach’s Oscar-winning 2019 drama Marriage Story, which chronicles the painful breakup of an actor (Scarlett Johansson) and her director husband (Adam Driver), who struggles to stay connected with his young son amid the separation.

If you have the entire weekend …

Call up a classic. And call your dad while you’re at it. All five seasons of Larry Wilmore’s The Bernie Mac Show, which originally aired on Fox from 2001–2006, are available to stream, which means there are more than 100 episodes of the Emmy Award–winning series ready to fill up your Father’s Day weekend. The beloved family sitcom stars the late, great Bernie Mac as a fictionalized version of himself, and follows him and his wife (Kellita Smith) as they suddenly take in his sister’s three children — and take on the responsibilities of parenting, to hilarious results.

Don’t forget, you have one last chance …

To chase your heart’s desire. In Todd Haynes’ stunning 2015 drama Carol, based on Patricia Highsmith’s 1952 novel The Price of Salt, a forbidden romance between a wealthy housewife (Cate Blanchett) and a shopgirl (Rooney Mara) upends both their lives. Watch it before next week, or forever regret letting love slip through your fingers.
