If you woke up one day this week (Tuesday, probably) and were horrified to realize that we are now halfway through July and your list of summer projects, written by an optimistic past version of yourself (on a rainy day in April, probably), boasts nary a checkmark, you’re not alone. While we’re not yet at the point of the summer at which we’re anxious to savor all that remains of it, we’ve definitely reached the point of being anxious to make some productive use of it.
So to make up for all those uncrossed-off to-dos, why not check off a title or two on your to-watch list that focus on a can-do attitude? Ready yourself for a renovation rom-com, laugh through a very handy sitcom, or let your inner child out with some projects on the sillier side. So go ahead and open up your toolbox, pull out the remote, and get streaming!

Murder in the great outdoors. Eric Bana stars in Untamed, a new six-episode drama from creators Mark L. Smith and Elle Smith about a National Parks Service investigator searching for a killer in Yosemite National Park. Too wild for you? Move into Wall to Wall, a new South Korean thriller from filmmaker Kim Tae-joon in which a man spends his life savings on a new apartment, but then is disturbed by what he hears through the walls upon moving in. Starting to feel claustrophobic? Spend some time in the wide-open spaces of two classic summer movies: Phyllida Lloyd’s sunny musical Mamma Mia! (2008) and Steven Spielberg’s beachside thriller Jaws (1975) are both now streaming.
Check in. In Roger Kumble’s 2019 romantic comedy Falling Inn Love, a burned-out San Franciscan (Christina Milian) gets a new lease on life when, after her career and relationship simultaneously implode, she wins ownership of an inn down in New Zealand from an online contest she entered impulsively. Once she arrives, however, she discovers that her new property is a crumbling ruin in need of major renovations — and she’s already off to a rocky start with the local contractor (Adam Demos). Putting their differences aside, the pair work together to bring the place back to life.
Use your imagination. Home makeovers are great, but sometimes it’s nice to devote all your energy and effort and power tools to something outrageous just because you can, which is exactly what Making Fun is all about. The eight-episode 2022 series features artist and builder Jimmy DiResta as he receives pointless, inconvenient, absolutely preposterous invention ideas from children — and then actually builds them, in all their wild detail, along with his capable crew.
Schedule some Tool Time. The classic ’90s sitcom Home Improvement, created by Carmen Finestra, David McFadzean, and Matt Williams, stars Tim Allen as Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor, the clumsy co-host of a home improvement show alongside his more competent sidekick Al (Richard Karn). Over eight seasons, Tim balances his TV job with the demands of raising his three sons (Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Zachery Ty Bryan, and Taran Noah Smith) with his wife Jill (Patricia Richardson) — all with a heavy dose of over-the-fence advice from his next-door neighbor Wilson (Earl Hindman).
For stardom. The beloved French series Call My Agent!, which was created by Fanny Herrero and ran for four seasons, follows the staff of a Parisian talent agency and their demanding clients (mostly French actors playing fictional versions of themselves). Next week, the agency’s phones will go dead.
