Is there a defrost button on this thing? As freezing temperatures sweep across much of the country, you may find yourself wrapped in multiple blankets and huddling next to the heater, trying to remember what it feels like to sit on a beach or wear a tank top. But there’s a better way to snap out of the cold-snap blues — with a wintry stream, naturally.
If you embrace the chill, you may find that it helps you melt a little. So cue up a dystopian action movie taking place on an Earth buried in snow, a mystery in which an ice queen holds court over a murderous wedding party, or a whole selection of cold cases that continue to mystify investigators. There are warmer days ahead, but in the meantime, try to play it cool.

An outrageous history. Luke Sewell’s new two-part limited series Jerry Springer: Fights, Camera, Action examines the legacy of the ’90s talk show that defined trashy TV — and changed American culture forever. Not wild enough for you? Turn to American Primeval, the new Old West drama series created by Mark L. Smith and directed by Peter Berg. Taylor Kitsch and Betty Gilpin lead the ensemble cast of pioneers on a brutal westward journey. Want some violence with that violence? Try Season 6 of I AM A KILLER, in which a new group of convicted murderers tell all.
Make it to the front. In Bong Joon-ho’s acclaimed 2013 post-apocalyptic thriller Snowpiercer (adapted from Jacques Lob and Jean-Marc Rochette’s graphic novel Le Transperceneige), Earth has frozen over in a new ice age; its remaining human inhabitants live aboard an ever-moving train, in cars segregated by social class. Chris Evans leads the cast as Curtis, a passenger in the crammed and filthy tail of the train who leads a rebellion against the elites living at the front. With the help of his allies (played by John Hurt, Octavia Spencer, and Jamie Bell, among others), he fights his way forward, car by car, to confront the system’s mastermind (Ed Harris) and his minister (Tilda Swinton).
Bow down to an ice queen. Nicole Kidman stars as the frosty but impeccable matriarch of a wealthy New England family in 2024’s The Perfect Couple, an adaptation of Elin Hilderbrand’s novel, created by Jenna Lamia and directed by Susanne Bier. The six-episode limited series stars Kidman and Liev Schrieber as an eminent couple whose son’s extravagant Nantucket wedding weekend is interrupted by a murder, the investigation of which uncovers some family secrets — and a killer among the elegant party.
Warm up some cold cases. All five volumes of Unsolved Mysteries, the 2020 reboot of the classic documentary series that ran from 1987–2010, are here to fill your weekend with haunting questions. Each episode of the show examines a confounding cold case or inexplicable phenomenon, all sure to give you chills even when you’ve got the heat blasting inside. And if you’d like to change the pace with a longform dive into some famous mysteries, call up Joe Berlinger’s Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey and Ari Mark and Phil Lott’s This Is the Zodiac Speaking, both released last year.
To attend the Jellicle Ball. Tom Hooper’s 2019 adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s fanciful 1981 musical Cats (itself based on T.S. Eliot’s 1939 poetry collection Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats) stars Judi Dench, Jennifer Hudson, Idris Elba, Ian McKellen, James Corden, Taylor Swift, and more as a group of anthropomorphic felines preparing for a very big night. After next week, the curious film will be a mere memory.
