Sometimes the sunniest days shine just before the thunderstorm hits. And, sometimes, the brightest smile hides the most tempestuous of moods. No one understands that complicated dynamic more than Stacey, the central character in the new limited series Weather Girl from Brian Watkins. Stacey is played by Julia McDermott, who’s reprising her role for the drama, which — much like Emmy darling Baby Reindeer — is based on a sold-out Edinburgh Fringe one-actor stage show.
In Weather Girl, Stacey is an ambitious local TV forecaster, whose camera-ready appearance hides her pain over the fires ravaging her California hometown. After a devastating assignment, Stacey begins to spiral even further — while confronting long-held emotional scars. Team Downey (comprised of Oscar winner Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey), A24, and Amanda Burrell will executive produce the project.

Set in wildfire-ravaged central California, the series follows Stacey (McDermott), a career-driven local television weather reporter, whose polished on-air persona masks her deep anguish over the destruction consuming her beloved hometown. After reporting from a burning home with a family of five inside, Stacey begins to unravel and spiral away from the reality she presents on screen. Weather Girl confronts the looming climate apocalypse; its story also intertwines a strange reunion between Stacey and her mother who abandoned her long ago.

Julia McDermott leads Weather Girl as Stacey, the role she originated in Watkins’s stage production during last year’s Edinburgh Fringe festival.
Brian Watkins (Outer Range) is the showrunner, writer, and EP of Weather Girl; he will also direct its first episode. Team Downey’s Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey (Sweet Tooth) are executive producers, as well as A24 (BEEF), and Amanda Burrell (Sweet Tooth). McDermott is also a producer.
