Draw your swords, because Vikings: Valhalla is about to reach a bloody breaking point. The new Netflix series, a sequel to the History Channel’s Vikings, chronicles the adventures of some of the most famous Vikings who lived 100 years after the original: the legendary explorer Leif Eriksson (Sam Corlett), his tough and headstrong sister Freydis Eriksdotter (Frida Gustavsson) and the ambitious Nordic prince Harald Sigurdsson (Leo Suter). So, what can we expect from these new characters and their stories?
If there’s one thing we know from the trailer, it’s that the battles never stop. After the St. Brice’s Day massacre, when King Aethelred II of England (Bosco Hogan) demands the slaughter of all the Danes on his land, the three protagonists find their fates intertwined. With rising tensions between the Vikings and the English royals, they must travel across oceans and through battlefields — from Kattegat to England and beyond — to fight for survival, revenge and glory.
After six seasons, Vikings ended in 2020. But the show’s executive producer Morgan O’Sullivan, along with Valhalla creator and showrunner Jeb Stuart, felt there was more to explore. “I feel like it should have some nostalgia,” Stuart told Entertainment Weekly. “We've got several great characters and we've got stories in different countries and things like that. I think that you almost need to be able to look over the horizon.”
For longtime fans of the show, that means more historical continuation of the universe they grew to love. In addition, Michael Hirst, creator of the original series, returns as an executive producer. Whether you’re an existing fan or new to the Vikings world, you won’t have to wait too much longer, because Valhalla sets sail Feb. 25. Between now and then, you can suit up that armor and get ready for battle.
