Centuries ago, Vikings were really, really obsessed with werewolves. Like, really. The ancient pillagers were infatuated by the lore of wolves, aka ulven. The mythology spans across Viking history — they revered varulver, feared them and looked to them as symbols of strength. The Norwegian horror movie Viking Wolf (Vikingulven) — by Kings Bay director Stig Svendsen and produced by Trollhunter’s John M. Jacobsen — explores this Norse fascination via a terror-filled series of events in a quiet Scandinavian town.
The film follows Thale and her family, who’ve just moved from Oslo to a place called Nybo. While attending a party to make some new friends, Thale’s knocked down by some… thing, some creature, that also viciously murders her new classmate. Is it human? Animal? Some sort of human-animal hybrid that’s been creeping around for nearly a thousand years? And why is Thale suddenly feeling so strange?

The horror flick will pounce on your screens Feb. 3.

The film stars Elli Rhiannon Müller Osborne (Utøya: July 22) as Thale; Liv Mjönes (Midsommar) as Thale’s mom, Liv; Vidar Magnussen (Norsemen) as Thale’s stepdad, Arthur; Mia Fosshaug Laubacher as Thale’s sister, Jenny; Sjur Vatne Brean (Delete Me) as Thale’s friend, Jonas; and Silje Øksland Krohne (The Painting) as Elin.
As legend has it, when a group of Vikings set out to plunder Normandy, they happened upon a dog in a locked room in the basement of an abbey. Except it wasn’t a dog. It was a hound from hell — and it killed them all. Cut to present day: 17-year-old Thale is getting acquainted with her new town when she witnesses a classmate get mauled by… what? She doesn’t know. As she heals from the trauma and fights off some weird aftereffects, the town must stop the bloodthirsty beast before it kills everyone in its path.
The film is set in the fictional town of Nybo Kommune, and was filmed in Notodden, Norway, and locations around Oslo.
