Writer/director Juel Taylor knows inspiration can come from anywhere. “I had this joke in my mind for a while, like ‘an entrepreneur, a pro, and a hustler walk into a bar and they end up solving a mystery,’” Taylor told Netflix earlier this year. Taylor’s new film They Cloned Tyrone turns that joke into a stepping stone.
In They Cloned Tyrone, Oscar winner Jamie Foxx joins John Boyega and Teyonah Parris in taking on a government conspiracy. The group is uniquely qualified for the job. Alongside Foxx’s onscreen bonafides (vampires and superheroes, among others), Boyega has experience taking on stormtroopers (the Star Wars sequels) and aliens (Attack the Block), while Parris is fresh off confronting vengeful ghosts (Candyman) and grieving witches (WandaVision). These three should have everything wrapped up before you can say “They cloned Tyrone.” You can learn more below — and check out a trailer for the film above.

A series of eerie events thrusts an unlikely trio onto the trail of a nefarious government conspiracy in this pulpy mystery caper.
Alongside Foxx, who also produced the film, They Cloned Tyrone stars John Boyega (Attack the Block, the Star Wars sequels), Teyonah Parris (WandaVision), David Alan Grier, Kiefer Sutherland, J. Alphonse Nicholson, Tamberla Perry and Eric Robinson Jr.
For Boyega, Tyrone was an exercise in digging a little deeper. “One of the things I love about the film is what you’re met with is a silhouette of a hustler, a silhouette of a pro, and a silhouette of the stereotype of the entrepreneur,” he told Netflix earlier this year. “But then you find out that the entrepreneur had dreams that were more nuanced than what he’s living now. You find out that the pro is well-educated and she compares herself to Nancy Drew in terms of the way her mind operates. And you find out that the hustler is dealing with trauma, after the loss of his younger brother. You see beyond the stereotype, now you get the layers of the onion skin coming off.”
They Cloned Tyrone hits Netflix on July 21. “I’m so curious to see what people are going to feel about it,” Boyega said.
