Lights, camera, (and back in) action! The legendary Paris Theater is about to raise its curtain once again to welcome New York film lovers back to its landmark movie palace.
The beloved jewel box theater will reopen in September following a series of technical upgrades that will deliver a one-of-a-kind cinematic experience. Now, audiences won’t just watch their favorite movies, but they’ll feel their immersive power thanks to a brand-new Dolby Atmos sound system. For the first time in 15 years, the Paris will also reintroduce a series of touchstone titles to be screened in their original, eye-popping 70 mm glory.
Adored by cinephiles, the Paris is New York City’s longest-running art house and Manhattan’s sole surviving single-screen theater. Cinema aficionados with a sweet tooth for foreign, indie, and prestige films have filled the treasured institution’s 500-plus seats for the past seven decades. After the Paris closed its doors in 2019, Netflix announced that it would keep the venue open to preserve its legacy, while also using the space for special events, screenings, and theatrical film releases. In August 2021, the theater officially opened with filmmaker Radha Blank’s directorial debut The Forty-Year-Old Version.

To mark the grand reopening, The Paris Theater is launching “Big & Loud,” a film series featuring a blend of canonical and modern classics to spotlight the historic venue’s new, industry-leading capabilities. With the recent upgrades, The Paris now stands as the largest Atmos cinema in Manhattan. And if you’ve strolled by its beautiful Art Deco façade lately, you might already have an inkling about what’s in store. For weeks, the theater has been dropping a few bread crumbs with famous quotes from films featured in the upcoming slate decorating the iconic marquee.
