“How did it come to this?” Queen Elizabeth asks in the final moments of The Crown Season 5 trailer. The question neatly sums up the two-minute clip, which heralds a challenging decade for the British monarchy.

A significant obstacle for the queen and her family in Season 5 is the nagging question of the crown’s continued relevance as the United Kingdom enters the 1990s. Can this rigid institution evolve with the times?

Adding to the strain is the marriage of Charles and Diana, the Prince and Princess of Wales (Dominic West and Elizabeth Debicki), who each have very different views of what it means to be royal in a modern world. “For years, I’ve called for a more modern monarchy that reflects the world outside,” Charles says in the trailer. Meanwhile, Diana dominates headlines while Prime Minister John Major (Jonny Lee Miller) attempts to put out political fires.

If the royal family is falling apart privately, can they hold the country together publicly? Find out when The Crown premieres on Netflix Nov. 9.
