When the LAPD keeps fumbling high-profile murders, a CIA-trained police interrogator from Atlanta is brought in to run an elite homicide unit — but her blatant disregard for office politics puts her at odds with her new team. Will her Southern charm and unusual interrogation methods be enough to win them over? Or will the LAPD’s Priority Homicide Division fall apart before they catch their first murderer?

The Closer stars Kyra Sedgwick, whose performance won her the 2010 Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series after five consecutive nominations. The nuanced police procedural also features J.K. Simmons and Mary McDonnell, the latter of whom earned a 2011 Emmy nom for her role in the Guest Actress category. James Duff, The Closer’s creator, also wrote and produced a spin-off series called Major Crimes, which featured a majority of the OG series’ cast.

What happens in The Closer?

LAPD Assistant Chief Will Pope (Simmons) feels the pressure. His squad has no problem catching killers, but they can’t manage to close cases in a way that translates to convictions. When their latest case ends in a public PR disaster for the LAPD, the higher-ups demand a change. Will takes a risk by hiring Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson (Sedgwick) — an old friend from Atlanta with unusual interrogation techniques honed at the CIA and an incredibly high conviction rate — to run a team of his best homicide detectives. But when Brenda arrives on the scene of a murder in a tech billionaire’s home, her demands, her tone, and her lack of trust in her new team’s skills ruffle some feathers. From that point on, not even Brenda’s charming Southern accent seems able to smooth things over with the department. From callous comments to outright mutiny, Brenda faces an uphill battle to solve her first case at the LAPD — but they don’t call her the closer for nothing.
