Testament: The Story of Moses Tells an Epic Biblical Redemption Story

Narrated by Charles Dance, the three-part docudrama chronicles Moses’ journey from exile to liberator.

There’s almost nothing as powerful as a good redemption story, and Moses — yes, that Moses — has one of the most compelling redemption arcs in human history.

Testament: The Story of Moses is the new documentary series exploring his life, from his exile as an outcast and murderer to eventual prophet and liberator. The three episodes take the story of Moses far deeper than the conventional wisdom generated by history classrooms and Charlton Heston; in other words, even if you think you know Moses, you have no idea. The new three-part series is directed by Benjamin Ross.

“Anyone who has seen The Ten Commandments as a child was well aware of the more epic elements of the tale,” producers Emre Sahin and Kelly McPherson told Netflix. “The burning bush, the plagues, Passover, the Red Sea, and, of course, the Ten Commandments. What really drew us in was the mystery of Moses’ inner life, his struggles with his own identity, his self-doubt, his humanness.”

Similar to historical docudramas like Queen Cleopatra and Alexander: The Making of a God, Testament weaves expert interviews into gripping storytelling. The series features interviews with academic contributors, many of whom agree that the story of Moses is more relevant to our lives today than we might think.

“Everything about his life, his challenges, what he went through, and what he’s done — there’s not a piece of it that’s not relevant to us today,” says Rabbi Shlomo Einhorn in the first episode of the series “Do you notice when people are suffering? Do you stand up or stay quiet? Social justice began with Moses.”

Who’s in the Testament: The Story of Moses cast?

Narrated by Charles Dance with actor Avi Azulay in the titular role, Testament documents Moses’ personal quest for redemption, setting in motion some of the biggest historical events in the Bible, Quran, and Torah. The cast also includes:

  • Dominique Jade Tipper as Zipporah
  • Mehmet Kurtulus as Pharaoh
  • Ishai Golan as Aaron
  • Reymonde Amsellem as Miriam
  • Tülay Günal as Bithiah
  • Melis Ulaş as Jochebed
  • Oberon K.A. Adjepong as Jethro
  • Emre Alp Törün as Dathan
  • Cem Emüler as Haman
