In a competition like Squid Game, surprises aren’t usually welcome — they’re almost always terrifying. But, this time around, the Korean drama has got a treat for its fans: You can now watch the first six minutes of the Squid Game Season 3 premiere early.

In the sneak peek above, the surviving Squid Game contestants receive a present of their own: Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), who was last seen leading the failed rebellion of Season 2. The Pink Guards deliver Gi-hun back to the Squid Game dormitory inside one of the gift-box coffins usually used for eliminated players. Although Gi-hun’s fellow competitors are relieved to see him alive, his portrayer confirms Player 456 still has many obstacles ahead of him in Season 3. In fact, Lee Jung-jae tells Tudum he felt like he was “being sucked into a different universe” when he filmed Gi-hun’s return to the competition.

“When the coffin is opened, Gi-hun is reborn,” Lee Jung-jae says. “He has to go back to the competition, play the game again, and make choices again.”

Gi-hun’s decisions will be more dire than ever, as Squid Game races into its final season. In Season 3, the games become deadlier, the tensions are higher, and Gi-hun must try to find a way to end the brutal competition once and for all. Meanwhile, the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) will raise the stakes at every turn, leading to graver consequences for each round of the game. Squid Game creator and director Hwang Dong-hyuk confirms that Front Man isn’t going to make things easy for Gi-hun. Even perceived acts of kindness — like allowing Gi-hun to live — are actually all part of Front Man’s diabolical plan.

“For Front Man, sending Gi-hun back to the game — rather than killing him — makes sense. He wants Gi-hun to really feel and understand the heavy price of his own mistakes,” Hwang tells Tudum. “Front Man wants Gi-hun to be driven to a state where he will finally give up his faith in humanity as well as faith in himself. It's important for the Front Man that Gi-hun returns to the game.”

Squid Game star Lee Byung-hun agrees with Hwang, explaining that Front Man ultimately isn’t worried about whether Gi-hun lives or dies. He simply just wants his former teammate to share his outlook — especially since they’re both former Squid Game champions. “Front Man wants to dismantle the noble belief that Gi-hun holds on to. Front Man believes that Gi-hun will inevitably change to think just like him,” Lee Byung-hun says.

So will Front Man win this battle of wills? Or will Gi-hun hold onto his humanity as time runs out on Squid Game? And, what’s happening on detective Jun-ho’s (Wi Ha-jun) rescue boat (which we get a glimpse of in the sneak peek clip)? To learn the answers to these questions — and so much more — tune into Squid Game’s third and final season on June 27. Until then, keep coming back to Tudum for all the news you need to get back into the game.
