‘Squid Game’ Had a Real Honeycomb Candymaker on Set

“The entire set was filled with the smell of honeycomb candy all day."

The production design of Squid Game’s challenges was always supposed to be nostalgic. The simple, childlike decorations paired with each classic playground game provides a stark juxtaposition to the consequence of losing: death. The players are revisiting their childhoods, but, at the same time, they're actually risking their lives.

That contrast is particularly emphasized during the honeycomb game, where players have to scratch a shape out of candy without breaking it. In a featurette about the making of the scene, production designer Chae Kyoung-sun tells Netflix that the clouds on the wall were actually hand-drawn with crayons.

A woman sits alone at a diner counter, looking thoughtful. Sunlight streams through large windows behind her, revealing a suburban neighborhood outside. The diner has a calm, vintage atmosphere.

Star Hoyeon Jung adds, "We had a honeycomb candymaker on-site who constantly made candy as we filmed. The entire set was filled with the smell of honeycomb candy all day." But since her character very carefully etches her shape out of the honeycomb, rather than tasting it, she never actually got a chance to try it.

Now you know: The scene really looked and smelled like a childhood fantasy.
