Shrek Films to Watch While You Digest What the Heck Shrekking Is

Revisit the Kingdom of Far Far Away as you ponder this new lingo.

Rejoice: The first four Shrek films are on Netflix. It is now time to relive your childhood (or your early adulthood, or what feels like two years ago but is actually, hauntingly, 24 years ago) via one terribly lovable ogre and the friends he makes along the way. The animated DreamWorks films, the first of which was directed by Andrew Adamson (The Chronicles of Narnia film series) and Vicky Jenson (Shark Tale), stars Mike Myers as the voice of Shrek, Cameron Diaz as the voice of Princess Fiona, and Eddie Murphy as the voice of Donkey.

The family-favorite franchise is also what inspired a recent addition to the cultural lexicon: shrekking. According to VICE, the term — slang for dating someone you adore but aren’t necessarily physically attracted to — stemmed from Fiona (beautiful ogre) and her relationship with Shrek (ogre not known primarily for his sex appeal). We’ll leave it to you to decide if you want to adopt that lingo into your vocab … or if it’s a fair way to refer to an exemplary ogre. In the meantime, here are more details on the Shrek films streaming now.

Shrek

The OG film. The first foray into the love story that is Shrek and Fiona. The introduction to one incredibly hyperactive donkey named Donkey. In the first of the franchise, Shrek (2001), the titular ogre is on a mission to save Princess Fiona from a fire-breathing dragon. Luckily, he’s got Donkey by his side. The rest of the cast includes The Crown’s John Lithgow, who voices Lord Farquaad, the character that is now referenced after many a bad haircut.

Shrek 2

Shrek 2 dropped three years after the original. It follows Shrek and Fiona, who are now — spoiler — betrothed and so accidentally in love. As the two attempt happily ever after in Far Far Away, Fairy Godmother (voiced by Jennifer Saunders) throws a wrench in their plans — or rather, a prince named Charming (voiced by Rupert Everett), who Fiona once fostered a childhood crush on. The cast is joined by Julie Andrews (Mary Poppins), John Cleese (Trolls), and Antonio Banderas (Paddington in Peru), who’s introduced for the first time as the wide-eyed assassin Puss in Boots.

Shrek the Third

Three years after Shrek 2, a gift was bestowed upon Earth: Shrek the Third. Yes, in 2007, the franchise returned. When the story resumes, Shrek, Fiona, Donkey, and Puss must go on a high-sea quest to find an heir to the kingdom. And also, oh boy, Shrek and Fiona are about to become parents. Will these two plot lines merge? Let’s find out. Joining the talent this time around? TV presenter Regis Philbin, Justin Timberlake (The Social Network), and Eric Idle (The Life of Brian).

Shrek Forever After

Nearly a decade after the original, Shrek Forever After landed in theaters. The fourth installment follows Shrek during a dark time: He’s caught up in a bad deal with Rumpelstiltskin (voiced by Walter Dohrn). Now he’ll need the assistance of Fiona, Donkey, and Puss in Boots to get his life back on track. Jon Hamm (Your Friends and Neighbors), Jane Lynch (Glee), and Craig Robinson (The Office) round out the cast.
