The Screen Actors Guild Awards made a repeat winner out of Jean Smart.
The legendary performer won her second consecutive award for her work in the HBO comedy Hacks at Sunday night’s ceremony, which was broadcast live on Netflix’s YouTube channel.
Her fellow nominees include Christina Applegate (Dead to Me), Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), Jenna Ortega (Wednesday) and Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary).
Smart, however, was not in attendance at the ceremony. The Hacks star revealed earlier this week that she’s recovering from a “successful heart procedure.”
“I am fortunate to have excellent care and support from family and friends while I continue to recuperate,” she wrote on Instagram.
Hacks co-star Christopher McDonald accepted the award on Smart’s behalf, sharing a prewritten speech from the stage, which gave a special shoutout to the series’ guest actors.
“I'm so sorry I can't be with you tonight," the speech began. "I would like to acknowledge my brilliant Hacks cast. I'd like to first acknowledge my fellow nominees, you rock, all your work was brilliant.”
"I'd like to honor all of the guest stars that appeared in Season 2, whether it
was one scene or one line," the speech continued. “I think we all know how hard a job that is. You have all made our show richer, funnier, more real and I can't thank you enough for that.”
Smart stars in the series as the feared and revered Las Vegas comic Deborah Vance, who takes a young writer played by Hannah Einbender under her wing. The two co-leads were also up for the outstanding ensemble in a comedy series award alongside cast members Carl Clemons-Hopkins, Paul W. Downs, Mark Indelicato and Megan Stalter.
Hacks has received immense critical acclaim since its premiere, including back-to-back Emmy trophies for Smart and honors across writing, directing and casting. The series has already been renewed for a third season.
