Abbott Elementary is top of the class at this year’s Screen Actors Guild Awards.
The classroom comedy about teachers at a Philadelphia public school won the prize for outstanding ensemble in a comedy series at Sunday’s ceremony, which was broadcast live on Netflix’s YouTube channel.
Abbott’s creator and star (who also was nominated in the category for female actor in a comedy series) Quinta Brunson accepted the award with her co-stars on stage.
“When I get to be a part of this ensemble, these people bring me back down to earth. They make me a better actor. They allow me to become an actress that I'm proud of,” she shared. “I want to be an actor, and I want to be a good one. And to be part of this ensemble makes me a better actor every single day. So thank you for recognizing the work of these amazing people. … I’m in awe of all of them at every single turn.”
Before wrapping up her acceptance speech, Brunson gave a shout out to the crowd by saying, “The peer award hits different, don't it? I feel good!”
Brunson was honored in the category alongside William Stanford Davis, Janelle James, Chris Perfetti, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Lisa Ann Walter and Tyler James Williams.
The ABC series’ win marks the first time since 2014 that a broadcast comedy has triumphed in this category. (The last one was Modern Family.) The other nominees this year were Barry, The Bear, Hacks and Only Murders in the Building.
Sunday night’s win is the latest in a golden streak for Abbott Elementary, which also picked up Emmy hardware (including for Brunson’s writing and Ralph’s supporting performance) and Golden Globes for Brunson, Williams and outstanding comedy series. The show is currently airing its second season and has been renewed for a third.
