Sabrina Carpenter’s seventh studio album, Man’s Best Friend is, as Carpenter describes on her Instagram, “a celebration of disappointment! It’s laughing at yourself and your poor choices as everything is falling apart.” If you’ve heard and related to her hit single “Manchild,” then you know exactly what she’s talking about.
It’s no surprise that Carpenter can laugh at herself, as her sense of humor has been a constant in her career as a singer — and as an actor. In 2020’s Work It, Carpenter shows off her physical comedy skills as a high school senior who has to learn how to dance in order to get into her dream college. And her 2024 holiday special, A Nonsense Christmas with Sabrina Carpenter, showcased both her vocal prowess and her silly, irreverent sensibility. But first, she played an integral part in both Tall Girl and Tall Girl 2: the short (n’ sweet) older sister.
Tall Girl
Sixteen-year-old Jodi (Ava Michelle) is dealing with all the problems of a typical teenager. But there’s another, big one: She’s very tall, which makes everything all the more difficult. Her much shorter BFF Jack (Griffin Gluck) has been in love with her since they were young, but Jodi yearns for someone who can tower above her. In walks Stig (Luke Eisner), a Swedish exchange student. Jodi is determined to do what it takes to get his attention.
Who can help her in this endeavor? Her beauty queen older sister, Harper (Sabrina Carpenter), a short, ruthless powerhouse with her own imperfections. She gives Jodi both the confidence and the makeover to try to get her guy.
Tall Girl 2
After Jodi gives an inspirational speech at homecoming, she has a newfound confidence, not to mention a new boyfriend and the lead role in the spring musical. But being out there now is making Jodi spiral about what she’s capable of. Can she squash her fears before the musical premieres? Meanwhile, Harper is trying new things, and trying to see how she can, erm, grow.
