When joining the cast of Umbrella Academy, you better be prepared to get physical. And for Season 2 newcomer Ritu Arya, that meant fighting every single superpowered Hargreeves sibling — in freezing cold weather. “I try to do as many of the stunts as I can,” Arya told Tudum behind the scenes of the Season 2 finale. But, that level of commitment to death-defying, superhuman stunt work is not always possible.
Arya made her Umbrella Academy debut in the second season of the perfectly wild show as Lila, a woman Diego befriends during his time in a mental hospital. And as the season went on, it was revealed that Lila wasn’t just some girl from the ’60s, she was actually another special child — born with powers like the Hargreeves but raised by The Handler.
Season 2 culminates in a major showdown between Lila and the Hargreeves. Not only is it one of the biggest fights ever to take place on the action-packed show, it’s also critical to Lila’s character: Her powers and her true identity are revealed. What is that power, exactly? Well, as it turns out, Lila’s superpower is actually the ability to mirror all other superpowers — making her a terrifying force of nature in the show’s supernatural landscape. It also means that, while Arya might want to do her own stunt work, it’s not exactly possible when her character is teleporting, flipping, and combining nearly every dangerous move ever depicted on The Umbrella Academy — all while explosives are, well, exploding around her. Instead, she’s grateful for her stand-ins to help her character evolve into this unprecedented force. “The stunt women are just in-cre-di-ble,” she said. “They’re making Lila look really badass.”
Arya, along with her fellow castmates, did reveal one hard truth they all faced in filming that epic Season 2 showdown: While they weren’t all responsible for their own stunts, everyone was subjected to filming during a surprise snowstorm. In another behind-the-scenes video, the Umbrella Academy cast details what it was like to film the final battle in ice-cold weather — and having to change everything due to an unexpected storm.
“It [was] actually so cold, we were told in the scene to maybe hold our breath, so we didn’t have all this breath showing on camera,” Arya said in an interview after filming where her breath, even then, was clearly visible in the frosty air. But perhaps the funniest part of filming in the cold? Her scene partner, Aidan Gallagher, whose on-screen alter ego Five is always wearing shorts, had to wear a skin-colored onesie under his wardrobe. It’s not easy being a superhero.
