Fans went into Season 2 of Ransom Canyon with just a few burning questions: What will concert pianist Quinn’s (Minka Kelly) return home mean for her on-again, off-again relationship with stoic rancher Staten Kirkland (Josh Duhamel)? Is disgraced cheerleader Lauren (Lizzy Greene) cozying up to her boyfriend Lucas’s (Garrett Wareing) brother Kit (Casey W. Johnson) — otherwise known as the man her mom Margaret (Sarah Minnich) was having an affair with? And who on earth is Sidney (Heidi Grace Engerman), the fiery redheaded woman claiming to be Yancy’s (Jack Schumacher) wife — and what will that mean for Yancy’s new fiancée, Ellie (Marianly Tejada)?
Season 2 answers all of these questions, while also introducing some even more complicated ones. But even as the drama ratchets up, Ransom maintains the playful mood that made Season 1 so addictive. “This season has a warmth and joy to it, a lot more romance, and even more shirtless men,” laughs creator April Blair. “It’s escapist with the same visual beauty and scope of Season 1, but this season is about healing.”
Kelly adds, “There’s something nice about just watching family dynamics figure themselves out, and watching these young people find themselves and make mistakes. Our show feels like a warm, cozy hug, and I love being a part of that.” Duhamel likens Ransom Canyon to an article of clothing befitting the neo-Western: “I’ve always described the show as an old pair of jeans,” he says. “It’s great storytelling, and there is definitely drama. I love drama without trauma.”

Oliver (Ben Robson) is another musician at the New York Philharmonic, whom Quinn starts dating during her six-month stint. They share a straight-out-of-a-movie meet cute: She steals his taxi, realizes she has no cash for the cash-only karaoke bar she’s headed to, and brings him along. “It’s so interesting how life can be sometimes, especially as a woman,” Kelly laughs. “When you take the time to choose yourself, chase your dreams, and be done with men, they all seem to not be able to get enough.”
Oliver brings out a different side of Quinn, but her heart remains in Ransom. So, when she returns home and Oliver surprises her by flying in to propose, she’s torn. He plies her with flown-in charcuterie boards, foot rubs, and grand gestures that show how willing he’d be to put down roots in Ransom.
But after five episodes of witnessing what’s still simmering between Quinn and Staten, Oliver and Quinn’s relationship collapses. She stays in Ransom, and he heads back to New York. “She found a guy who was really nice to her, but it wasn’t enough, because it wasn’t Staten,” says Kelly. “Sometimes those things are hard to explain when it’s just a cosmic, lifelong connection.”
In Episode 6, Staten crashes Quinn’s road trip to make a play to win her back. When they stop for gas, he fiddles with her engine, forcing them to stay the night at a dusty motel hours from Ransom — and there’s only one bed in the room, of course. “Season 2 is about Staten getting out of his own way and healing,” says Blair. “It gave us freedom to do all of this fun stuff. Even just the bickering, banter-y rom-com stuff has a joy to it.”
Staten and Quinn pass the evening drinking whiskey in a game of truth or drink, and Staten shares how, decades ago, he brought a letter over to Quinn’s house the night before she left for college at Juilliard. Quinn says she never got the letter, and that she wishes he’d fought harder for her. “Quinn’s struggling with this idea of fate,” says Blair. “Even this Notebook-esque thing that happened with the letter, she’s attributing that to, ‘Look, fate has been keeping us apart.’”
From the minute Claire (Patricia Clarkson) returns to Ransom, Quinn seems wary of her mom. Quinn and her sister Angie (Lauren Glazier) allude to Claire’s history of failed marriages and money troubles. No matter how many glasses of wine or (burnt) enchiladas Claire offers as an olive branch, the sisters have their guards up. “To unpack that mother-daughter relationship has been really fun and informed some of the stuff we've seen with Quinn in season 1,” says Blair.
In Episode 6, we learn that Claire is the reason Quinn never got Staten’s note. She intercepted it because she worried Staten would hold her daughter back. “You don’t always get the mother you want,” says Kelly. “You want to learn and grow from her mistakes, and you also love her for her mistakes.”
Offscreen, Kelly and Clarkson’s dynamic couldn’t be more different. “My days on set with Patty were my favorite, because they were just the most connected and vulnerable and beautiful. I love that woman,” Kelly says. “You’re like, ‘I’ve got to show up for Patty. I want to give her my all,’ because that’s what she’s giving you.”
By the season finale, they manage to wade through their complicated history and reunite. “The audience deserves it. We’ve been teasing them for two years,” Duhamel laughs. “Will they, won’t they? Every time you think it’s going to happen, something happens.”
He gives Claire a wooden box to deliver to Quinn, which contains instructions to meet him at the hunting lodge he first mentioned in the letter that she never received. The gesture marks his growth, and a moment of healing for Claire, Staten, and Quinn.
“You’re so scared of being hurt, but you just decide to take that risk to be honest and to stop running,” says Kelly of this moment for her character. “You decide to stop thinking something needs to be a certain way, and you accept what is. That’s what they both did.” He gives her a key to his ranch, and they agree to start “forever, now.”
Sidney is first introduced in the Season 1 finale. She turns up at Gracie’s bar and tells Ellie that Yancy is her husband. Considering Ellie and Yancy were planning to get married, this comes as a huge shock. Early in Season 2, we learn that Sidney and Yancy’s “marriage” is fraudulent; it was all part of a con in his past. Thankfully, Ellie and Yancy’s relationship is still intact, and they’re expecting a baby.
Sidney and Yancy’s union might have been hollow, but they are legally married. When Sidney sees how happy he is with Ellie, she tells him he’ll only get his divorce if she gets half of Fuller Ranch.
Yancy learns that his late grandfather, Cap (James Brolin), bought a worthless plot of land and owed six months of back taxes, so Yancy and Sidney band together for one last scheme that will get them both what they want. Using her feminine wiles and Kirkland patriarch Sam’s (Brett Cullen) rivalry with Yancy, Sidney tries to convince the elder Kirkland to buy the land by telling him there are oil prospects.
All of their scheming attracts the attention of Deputy Kai (Justin Johnson Cortez). After some digging, he discovers Sidney is actually Katherine Beatrice Lockwood, a person of interest in a Louisiana homicide investigation. Kai and Sam arrest Sidney and convince her to have Yancy wire his share of the con money to Sam’s account.
Just when you think this tangled web couldn’t get more complicated, it turns out that Yancy, Staten, Sam, and Kai had all been working together to double-cross Sidney. “Yancy begins to question whether he wants to start his family off on that note of dishonesty,” says Blair. “So instead of grifting his community, they all come together to pull a grift on the grifter. It has a Thomas Crown Affair grift on a grift.”
The last we see of Sidney is in Episode 7, when she pushes Ellie off the porch, causing her to go into labor early. Will Kai and the police force find her, or is that the last we’ll see of Sidney?
Ellie gives birth to a beautiful baby girl named Isabella. “It was a real baby played by twins,” says Blair. The production had an added layer of realism because “Marianly Tejada really was pregnant on the show,” she adds.
Over the course of Season 2, Yancy struggles with regressing back to his old life. But after Sidney attacks Ellie on her porch, Ellie realizes how dangerous the con world is, and decides to end things. “She’s feeling afraid and needs to protect her child and herself, and decides they need distance from Yancy,” says Blair. Yancy is distraught and intends to win her back.
Freddie (Kenneth Miller), a con man, tells Yancy that Cap didn’t make a bad investment after all, and that there’s actually oil underneath Yancy’s plot. But, is he telling the truth?
When Season 2 opens, Lauren is still reeling from her mom’s arrest for the death of Randall (Hubert Smielecki), Staten’s son. Margaret was drunk behind the wheel of the car that forced Randall off the road, causing his fatal crash.
Additionally, Lauren’s still recovering from an injury: “She’s no longer on the cheerleading team. She no longer has this hot prospect of a scholarship. Lucas is an eternal optimist and tries to lift her up,” says Blair. Lucas’s life has also changed, but in the opposite direction: his social standing at school has risen; he even wins homecoming king.
Lauren believes that her darkness will hurt Lucas. “She finds herself increasingly drawn to the worst person she could be drawn to, and that's Lucas’s brother, Kit,” Blair explains. “She’s caught in this pull between two young men who represent different things for her, and Kit seems to understand it a little better.”
In Episode 5, Lauren finds Kit home alone, and they finally kiss. There’s never a good time to kiss your boyfriend’s brother, but the moment your boyfriend happens to be looking through the window is definitely the worst.
Lucas chooses Twilight for a movie date with Lauren — so he should know a thing or two about love triangles. Still, he is completely blindsided by his brother and girlfriend kissing. He breaks up with Lauren and starts to act out, even sleeping with Lauren’s best friend-turned-frenemy, Ashley (Jennifer Ens), one night while they’re smoking weed. “It’s a little bit more of a mature storyline for those teen characters,” says Blair. “It’s more about making real, messy mistakes for the first time, and how they are growing through them.”
Lauren’s dad, Dan Brigman (Philip Winchester), is the town’s sheriff, and considering Kit’s history with the law (and his wife), Dan’s not Kit’s biggest fan. He secures Kit a spot on a ranch in Wyoming for a fresh start. As Kit tells Lucas he’s leaving, Lucas breaks down, and the two reconcile. Kit still heads off to the bus stop because he thinks leaving will fix their brotherly mess.
It seems like that’s the end of that, until Lauren comes to their trailer looking for Kit. Lauren and Lucas talk through what happened between them, sealing the truce with a pinky promise, and then Lucas tells her Kit is at the bus stop, implicitly giving them his blessing and showing how much he loves her.
In a big romantic gesture, she hustles to the bus stop to stop Kit. It’s unclear what’s next for Kit since he’s too busy locking lips with Lauren, who tells him, “I’m not letting you go,” to make his bus.
Ransom is a small town, so it isn’t the biggest surprise that there happens to be some familial overlap in romantic choices. Kit was involved with Lauren’s mom, Margaret, in Season 1, and even helped cover up her involvement in Randall’s death.
Levi (Steve Howey) is Staten’s half-brother who lives a mountain man lifestyle in the woods. “He was born out of wedlock. He never felt like he was a Kirkland because he was this dirty secret that their father kept. He wasn’t even really allowed to come to the ranch,” says Duhamel. “Staten never saw him as an outcast, only as his brother. So when Staten goes to see him, he realizes how much disdain Levi has for the family.”
At the end of Season 1, Sam ousts Staten from the Double K board of trustees. So when Season 2 opens, the two are feuding. “Staten and his dad have butted heads since he was a kid,” says Duhamel. “His dad never really took an interest in the ranch. So when Sam decides to come back after he loses the last senatorial election, it really throws a wrench into their relationship. Sam desperately wants the respect of not only Staten, but the whole crew out at the ranch.”
Thankfully, the two reach common ground by the end of Season 2. “Sam figures out that he overstepped and Staten’s the guy who should actually be running the place,” says Duhamel. “It’s actually a nice way to put a bow on that relationship, but it takes us a while. They’re both very stubborn men. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.”
Well, fast-forward to halfway through Episode 7, to around 15 minutes, and you’ll find out. “I look around, and it’s shirtless dudes everywhere,” says Duhamel of the show’s preference for exposed muscles. “It’s like a man-tage.”
Soon after Quinn returns to Ransom, she notices how many businesses have shuttered in the wake of Austin Water and Power’s departure. “I love that she gave up this flashy, exciting life in New York for her small town,” says Kelly. “She put her mind to it, asked for help, and found a way to bring the town back.” Quinn sets out to revitalize her beloved hometown with a country music festival called No Place Like Home.
“It really is about community and coming together,” says Blair. “Quinn realizes there’s this whole history: Willie Nelson’s tour bus broke down, and he set up shop in this old factory space that is now Gracie’s, and played for three days with Waylon Jennings. Ransom has value beyond the water beneath it.”
Headlining No Place Like Home are none other than country music superstars Thomas Rhett and Jordan Davis. The award-winning musicians had everyone singing along to “Boots” and “Bar None,” and other fan favorites. Only on Tudum, get a backstage pass to the festival with deleted scenes of Rhett and Davis.
“They were so delightful, sweet, talented, humble, kind, down to play, and it just fit the vibe perfectly,” says Kelly. Blair adds, “T.R. and Jordan are actually friends in real life. Both are family men and committed to acts of service, so they responded to the story of Quinn throwing this to save the small town.”
Quinn’s music festival breathes new life into Ransom — flooding the town’s hotels, restaurants, and stores with newcomers eager to hear country music. Quinn decides to reinvest the profits from the ticket sales back into Ransom and buy the Lone Star hotel. “Season 2 is really about community rebuilding,” says Blair.
“That plotline felt like a bond we all need right now to remember how much we all need each other, and what it feels like to show up for each other,” says Kelly.
