Ring the Charm Alarm — Princess Power has sparkled its way onto Netflix! This all-new pre-K series is a celebration of girl power, friendship and self-expression. The princesses wear pants in this fairy tale, but remember: it’s not what you wear, but what you do that makes a difference.
“We’re not anti-sparkle, anti-fun, anti-glitter,” Savannah Guthrie, co-author and co-producer of the series, tells Tudum. “Just make sure that what’s on the inside matches all the razzle-dazzle on the outside.”
The Today show host teamed upv with actor Drew Barrymore to produce the new children’s show that even parents and big kids can enjoy. Find out more about the Princess Power cast, music and messaging in our interview with Guthrie and Barrymore below.
Princess Power follows four best friends — Kira Kiwi, Beatrice “Bea” Blueberry, Rita Raspberry and Penelope “Penny” Pineapple — who also happen to be princesses of the major fruit kingdoms. In each episode, they use their unique skills and interests in animals, sports, arts and science to help their fellow “fruitizens” solve problems and make the world a better place. Along the way, they learn important lessons about being kind, doing their best and working together.
“That’s the tone that I always wanted for my daughters,” Barrymore tells Tudum. “[The shows] that have said ‘Go for it’ or ‘You can do it’ or even just ‘Try.’ It can be life changing messaging.”
Princess Power is based on the No. 1 New York Times best-selling children’s book series, Princesses Wear Pants, co-authored by Guthrie and Allison Oppenheim. Characters from the books make their way into the series and likely into the hearts of anyone watching.
“Fussy is my favorite character from the books, I fell in love with her from the first page she’s on,” Barrymore says. “Miss Fussywiggles just makes me so happy and I like that her attitude is just regal and admirable. I wish I could pull that off.”
Some very familiar voices join Guthrie and Barrymore in helping bring Princess Power to life including Academy Award winner Rita Moreno, Tan France, Jenna Ushkowitz, Ciera Payton, Andrew Rannells and many more.
It was important to both Guthrie and Barrymore that Princess Power was fun for the whole family, especially parents. “We’re parents and we’ve watched many days, months, hours, years of [TV] trying to find things for our kids that we felt good about, that we enjoyed, that had the right message and tone, that was also fun and capable and cool, and I think this show accomplishes all that,” Barrymore shares.
“[The] themes resonate whether you’re 3 years old or you’re a mom watching while you’re doing 10 other things,” Guthrie added. “It’s something that parents can feel good about and kids are learning a really important lesson whether they realize it or not.”
While learning those important life lessons, kids and grown-ups alike will also have a lot of fun watching the hijinks the princesses and their families get up to. “We wanted to make a world that was really exciting. It’s fantasy! It’s over the top, it’s beautiful, it’s colorful, [it’s] a lot of fun.” Guthrie says.
The songs in Princess Power are sure to get stuck in your head, and you won’t want to let them out. Each track carries with it an inspiring message about teamwork, trying new things or being yourself.
